Target publishing markets
Consultations:
Since I write and publish in a variety of forms, I work comfortably with novelists, poets, writers of short fiction, prose poets, writers of creative non-fiction and writers who work across genres. Consultations range from intensive editing to helping writers mine new materials and discover new forms. Although my initial focus isn't market-driven, many of the writers who work with me have gone on to win awards and publish with large houses, university presses, or prominent literary magazines and zines. You're welcome to ask me for a list, but I would stress that the success of the writers I work with comes from taking risks with what they most enjoy doing, whether mainstream or experimental. Craft without original voice is empty. Original voice without craft often fails to move a reader. I am committed to helping writers work with both.
Seminars for seasoned writers:
Most seminars are open only to writers who have worked with me and are at a fairly advanced level. However, if you think you would benefit from a class, please feel free to get in touch with me at thaisa@well.com.
Special consultations for therapists who write:
Most writers deal with the question of how and when to use their lives as material. But therapists, who are pledged to confidentiality and wear a good deal of camouflage in the office, often confront these issues on more complex levels. My previous work as a therapist has helped me work with therapists who write creatively, encouraging them to write the first draft with the door closed and worry about opening the door in later drafts.
I also work with therapists who are writing books about psychology, in most cases saving them the considerable time and expense involved in hiring professional writers to help them make their books and articles readable. In addition to private consultations with therapists, I also hold one-day workshops. My training includes four years of hypnotherapy with Dick Olney and five years of work in object relations. I am also a certified teacher of the Enneagram.
