This picture is of some asshole who decided to climb the man and caused some minor damage to the lighting.  I post it here because it does do a nice job of showing the scale of  The Man.

This is obviously a mistake by the photographer (me), but I think it turned out pretty cool anyway.

Here, they have lowered the man to load him up with fireworks and various offerings from the participants.  People often put symbolic items into The Man to purge themselves in the pure fire.  The raising of  The Man is an important participatory ritual that used to be shared by the entire camp, but as Burning Man has grown, it has become impossible to include everybody in this ritual.  Even in the relatively moderate crowds of 1994, the Man was nearly pulled completely over by the crowd pulling the rope.
