NOTES ON ESCAPE (AT313)
AT 313 is folklorists’ shorthand for the folktale type also known as “Girl as Helper in the Hero’s Flight,” which partially inspired this piece.
The bedframe, which my father made for me in my childhood, is filled with about 500 pounds of salt. Blued tack nails are pushed into the salt, leaving only flat heads visible in a small circular arrangement underneath the sheer, midnight-blue silk. Over time the salt rusts the nails, the rust stains the salt, and the apple appears unchanged as the salt preserves it. Monopoly motels lie on the silk that overflows onto the floor.
