Scuba Diving
I'm fortunate to live near a world-class dive area -- Monterey, California.
One of my favorite dives is a beach dive -- Monastery Beach in
Carmel Bay. This is a very steep beach on the edge of the Monterey
Bay Submarine Canyon -- the second deepest rift in the world.
The site's proximity to the
Carmel finger of the canyon makes for habitat rich in
invertebrate and fish life.
I recently got bent on the north side of this beach.

If you're thinking about diving
soon, you might check conditions at the Interactive Marine
Observations site (courtesy of NOAA). Check out the server
push -- updates the marine data every three minutes.
I've learned to predict good visibility days by watching the data
from these buoys. If the swells are
heavy for several days in a row, its a safe bet that things will
be pretty stirred up and diving will be not much fun.
