Ketchikan
was our last Alaskan port, and a real treat. It's a big town by
Alaskan standards,
but plenty of fine sightseeing, including three excellent museums,
within walking
distance of the dock.

I
don't think I've ever been to a place as proud of its red-light district as Ketchikan
(prostitution was
legal until 1953). They've restored the old bordello boardwalk,
Creek Street, as a tourist district. Dolly's,
the home of one the town's best
loved erotic entrepreneurs, is well worth a visit. Hey, how often can you
visit
a whorehouse for four bucks a head?.
Ketchikan is justifiably famous for totem poles, with fine examples displayed
in parks, museums and private yards all over town. Here are a few that particularly
caught my eye....

The last one, the 'Truman Totem', features Harry Truman atop Winston Churchill atop Joseph Stalin.
Carved by a Tlingit artist, it's actually more authentic than most of the made-elsewhere stuff that
crowds the tourist shops, despite the subject matter.
