First of all, a major thank-you to Alan Trist and Ice Nine Publishing for granting permission for us to include the lyrics here.
Greetings, readers and posters! This is meant to be a fairly free-wheeling discussion of the lyrics to most every song performed and recorded by the band. We start each topic with pointers to Alex Allan's Grateful Dead Lyric and Song Finder (LASF) and to my Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics (AGDL), then, where possible and permissible, we post the lyrics. Thenceforward, it's up to you--what memories does the song trigger, what have the lyrics meant to you over time, what questions do you have, (not that anyone will have any easy answers...)?
In the spirit of the current seeming re-emergence of Grateful Dead energy moving forward, via Furthur's incredible series of small rehearsal shows, combined with a number of big concerts and heading into a tour, I'm proposing that we add the new songs they are creating, or originals that they (Phil and Bob) have been performing post-GD with thier individual bands, but are now continuing into the active repertoire. What are those tunes? I know of two I'm curious about: "Welcome to the Dance." I had thought of including "Magnolia Mountain," but am unsure if, given that it's a Ryan Adams song, it qualifies. Any others? "Welcome to the Dance" is up on Alex's site, so I can add a topic for it.
Other possibilities from recent Furthur sets include: "Money for Gasoline" "Silvio" "No More Do I" That's all I can spot, outside of a couple of Ryan Adams songs.

I'm not sure what the rules might be, David, but I am strongly in favour of any injection of new energy.
We get to make up the "rules," I would guess...I just wondered if those Ryan Adams songs were really more part of his repertoire, or part of P&F.

I think you should qualify the songs in the topic title to avoid confusion with gd songs performed with garcia such as xxxxxx (further) yyyyyy (phil and friends) zzzzzz (ratdog) aaaaaa (hunter) or whatever other band in the past or future
That sounds smart! Thanks.
However, I would need help in re-naming the two topics on songs of this type I just started....how do you re-name a topic?
Send email to <confteam> with all the necessaryinformation and it will be taken care of.
Thanks, David!

I have just received a copy of Stephen Calt's Barrelhouse Words, a blues dialect dictionary. I shall scour it over the weekend for relevant info (eg boxback knitties). If you can think of any likely phrases that I should look up, let me know.
Yay--thanks, Robin! I'll think on this...

Thanks everyone! Next step is to go to Buckingham Palace to get dubbed by the Queen with her sword - hope she has a steady arm.
