Not UJB, but I misheard "four bucks and and change" as "four bolts and
chains" for years.

as far as Uncle John's band, I always thought it was a summoning, a
request for others to gather and listen- Come Hear and not a request
of the band to get closer...

Buck dancers choice on the other hand, go back and forth between 2
iterations in my mind..

There is a buck (deer) dancing free (choice) in the forest near the
tide in the next verse and river side in the following verse. All
the animals, humans and forest critters dancing to Uncle John's
band.

Then, learning that the boys played early on and often along that
famous strip on Columbus, I had filled my mind with a buck (naked)
dancer - and still the tide could refer the the bay where Columbus
ends - but there are no river sides in that part of the city that
I'm aware, but I can still see the dancers and others enjoying the
music.

so sometimes I see humans and forest critters, and other times I see
a striptease dancer on a stage with a crowd of people below the low
stage dancing to the tunes that Uncle John's band belts out...

I had never thought about it being a money... Interesting idea.

....and giving it a little more more thought, and stretching out
the striptease dancer, the 'buck' could be what people put in a
striptease dancers 'belt' to keep them dancing... Could buck dancer
be slang for striptease dancers?

I still like the idea of forest animals and humans dancing together
to the bands tunes.

I think Hunter would be glad for you to be bringing an
interpretation to it that he hadn't thought of himself.

(the following is from the Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics)

An astute member of the WELL Deadlit conference noticed that a
manuscript of the handwritten lyrics up for auction along with
Garcia's guitars back in April 2002 included these words:

"Why wait in the dark for dawn
(while) when the sun's still going down?
Maybe I'll dust off your chair
if you say you're comin' round
Keep your place in line
all things come in time
Whoa-oh,all I need to know,
(will) do these coals glow?

Would you carry me uphill
back the way I carried you?
Take me further, if you can,
(You know) I'd do the same for you.
Think this through with me,
let me know your mind,
Whoa-oh all I want to know is,
Will you be kind?

Well now - I can hear
The flutter of their wings,
Standin' still on our little (not sure about that word) hill
can you hear the sirens sing?

Come hear U.J.B / playing to the tide etc."
