It's more in terms of the song's musical, and to a lesser extent thematic, atmosphere. I suppose it also may have more to do with Paul seeming less ebullient and joy-mongering than Jesus had been in the New Testament writings.

I always think of my grandpa. But not him. More like an imaginary photo of him, post-surgery at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in NYC. But I visited him there IRL. In 1978 or thereabouts. I don't think "Grandpa." I think about that imaginary photo. Most of the time grandpa doesn't come into it.
