 Announcement: Just in case you somehow escaped hearing about it, the book
 version of the Annotated Lyrics website, which is much more than just a book
 version of a website, entitled The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics,
 is now available from Simon and Schuster. Foreword by Robert Hunter,

I was at Borders Bookstore the other night and nosing through the Grateful
Dead Section. One of the clerks noticed and very excitedly showerd me David
Dodd's new book. He was a Deadhead of course and was taking me through page
after page of points he found particularly interesting.

The book is beautifully illustrated and with the simplicity of genious in the
way all it's information is laid out. I suspect that one of the uninitiated
who don't seem to "get it" would be able to look through these pages and
recognize that there is much more to this counter culture band than just a
bunch of drug crazed hippies. The Dead are an artistic expression of
Americana where all the cultures of the world have collided together and
produced a unique and rich blend of it's own.

Thank you David, and everyone else who contibuted, for giving us this jewel
of a book.

Announcing a newly-scheduled booksigning, this Wednesday, October 19, at the
Dark Star Orchestra show at Petaluma's Mystic Theatre. Doors at 7 p.m. Books
will be sold on site by local independent bookseller Copperfield's Books, a
great bookstore. Come by and say hi even if you don't need to buy a copy of

Did you pick up anything for the book from deadsongsdotvue, or was it
all from the Annotated site? Is there a risk of things falling through
the cracks?
  

    
First, I want to say that tonight's signing has been cancelled by the
venue--not enough space for my table in the lobby.

Second, Robin--didn't use much if anything from deadsongs.vue. And yes, a
LOT of stuff is bound to be left out of the book. I just kind of had to
resign myself to that at some point when we started putting the book

Do you see it as a foundation to build on or, as Hunter remarkes in
the Anthem to Beauty DVD, "once it is laid down ... "? If it is a
foundation, do you see Annotated as still being the collection point?
  

    
Hmmm. I guess I hope that nothing is carved in stone! And that
whatever ideas people have continue to get collected up in places like
the annotated lyrics site, deadsongs.vue, other books, other websites,
among ourselves, within ourselves, etc. until we look up and discover
that centuries have gone by....not to get too cosmic here. 
  

    
Yes, well, we are a long way down the road in our project to ensure
that Grateful Dead and Grateful Dead culture are the best documented
aspects of the 20th century music world.
  

    
Tomorrow evening (Friday, December 2, 2005) I'll be talking about the book
and selling and signing copies in a benefit for my own Library, the San
Rafael Public Library. The event is a fundraiser for our book fund, and is
being held in conjunction with a preview of the Friends of the Library's
December used book sale. It's a members-only event, but you can join at the
door for a very reasonable fee, and then you will be supporting a wonderful
library. It starts at 7 pm. Hope to see some of you there! (1100 E St., San
