Dark Star Lyrics: Robert Hunter Music: Garcia, Hart, Kreutzmann, Lesh, McKernan, Weir Copyright Ice Nine Publishing; used by permission. Dark star crashes Pouring its light into ashes Reason tatters The forces tear loose from the axis Searchlight casting For faults in the clouds of delusion Shall we go, you and I, while we can? Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds Mirror shatters In formless reflections of matter Glass hand dissolving To ice petal flowers revolving Lady in velvet Recedes in the nights of goodbye Shall we go, you and I, while we can Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds? Spinning a set the stars through which the tattered tales of axis roll about the waxen wind of never set to motion in the unbecoming round about the reason hardly matters nor the wise through which the stars were set in spin
To me these lyrics reflect the cataclysmic repercussions of Lucifer's rebellion in the heavenlies. In essence, the original Bright and Morning Star, Lucifer-the most glorious of all the angelic beings-endeavored to overthrow the position of the Most High God. A spiritual battle ensued which tore the forces loose from the axis . The Bright and Morning Star crashed and burned and became the Dark Star. Creation was left racked and ruined and in the bondage of corruption waiting for the day of redemption. Those of us in this temporal realm are called upon to find the faults in the clouds of delusion. Doing that we will find the where with all to break through and find our way in to all that is right and true. To the place where the spiral light of Venus Shines first and best. The new Bright and Morning Star is beckoning, he is the Son of the Most High. shall we go...you and I...?
Wow, fascinating interpretation, thanks...
Steven Kenney asks: I have a Dark Star question I'm a bit fixated on and wondering if you can help. Is there data on how many times the second verse of Dark Star was performed/sung?? I've heard so very many where they veer off after the first verse and never come back. Nerdiest question ever but I'd love to know, if it's known!

All I can tell you for sure about the second verse: only twice in 1972, not at all in 1973-74. Hope that very little bit helps.

Thanks. I happily stand corrected. Three times in '72.
