London book you mentioned was vanished, but the Chesterton collection
of essays you want is TREMENDOUS TRIFLES.

Erynn -- do hope you have a much better day tomorrow. Agree with you
that things come in threes and on the plus side... good things happen
this way as well.

Please, do call the bookstore and ask them to reserve a copy of you -
it would be horrible if you make it to the signing and they are out of
books.

Streak -- damn you! Peep posts made me snort and quite thankful that
I wasn't taking a drink while reading. Peeps, alcohol but no
mushrooms... http://www.learnlink.emory.edu/peep/

Will -- Hello and welcome! This is a lovely group, isn't it!

Neil -- Have a good time in South America.

It looks like I will be going to Vroman in Pasadena (was told I would
love the bookstore and will be given directions from one of the
co-workers). Is anyone from the list going to attend the reading?

Email me ASAP. It's important.

(I tried emailing you, it failed.)

Neil - <blinks> Odd 'Stardust' books? Also: Have fun in Brazil. Is
William Shatner showing up this time? Fly/travel safe.

Martha - I reread WALLS again recently, and I have to say, it gets
better with each read.

Linda--thanks!! I'm glad to finally be here.

Peeps--eeewwww. I have never gotten it. Stale or fresh, they're icky.

Tara--good idea! We could all wear black...er...no...ummm....I dunno.
Somefink. (Too much Pratchett over the last few days). Oh, been
meaning to tell you--love your user name! Gaelic was a good choice.

Erynn--Girl, I am so sorry. I am in the same boat. Sending good
vibes your way.

Suzanne--birthday week is rockin'. Got to see Blues Traveler for free
on Tuesday, too. Sometimes living in this town rocks. One of my
friends is threatening to come over & help unpack tomorrow, but once
she saw the nightmare of boxes last night, I wonder if she'll make it.

It looks like the concert version of Carmen I'm singing in will be
O.K. Had a good last rehearsal (with orchestra!) tonight.

Neil--safe journey!

I am incredibly envious of all of you who are able to make it to a
signing, particularly those of you going to multiple ones.
*envy**envy**envy* Ah well... I just can't feel too jealous, or really
bad about anything, knowing that in a month's time, Amazon will be
mailing me my copy of _American Gods_ (and, of course, that by that
time I'll be a father). The excitement over-rides all else.

FNAC in Brazil, eh? This sounds like a job for the ACRO thread. ^^
Fanatical Neil-Assaulting Crowds? (If so, hopefully those guards will
be there again to pass him bodily out the door to safety.) Of course,
it could well not be a composite of English words.

Neil -- Having just re-read _Smoke & Mirrors_, a thought occured to me
this morning. The Moorcock story, that was a riff on Joyce's
_Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man_? Or is that definition of what
comprises excessive masturbation simply a widespread one across the
water?

Hey all...

Tonight's the opening night of Arabian Nights at the middle school.
(Remember I was asking all those questions about the AN? They all come
to fruition tonight. I hope.) On the whole, I'd rather the show was
over already and I was at a screening of Moulin Rouge, but so be it.
Anyways, that's my major news.

Neil-- bon voyage! Have a caipirinha for me! (I grieve the fact that
you don't like olives, and I hope you someday see the light, but I'll
still read American Gods five times before the New Year.)

Jinx-- Can I bring some vermouth and join you guys?

Mary: the Tara O'Shea part? Or the uisgejack part? The uisgejack you
can blame equally on AOL, Charles de Lint, and Disney's Gargoyles. I
was in the thick of my obsession with tricksters when I moved back to
Chicago in 1996 and got my AOL account, only "WhiskeyJack" was too long
to use as a screen name, so I decided, well, uisge and whiskey sound
the same, and it fits, so there ya go...

Martha -- Well, I'm from Prague (where I live now), but I grew up and spent
most of my life in and around Toronto, Canada. And about lemon in mineral
water, I certainly don't mind it, but not with my wine. I feel it kind of
defeats the purpose of having ordered it.

Neil -- That's too bad. I was really looking forward to finding Smoke
& Mirrors in Czech. I guess I'll have to wait for Anerican Gods. By the way,
do you know if and when the English version will be released in the Czech
Republic?

Everyone -- I have to admit I'm a little lost. What are Peeps?

more e-mail from JaNell:

Well, move and suddenly, I'm hundreds of posts behind. So, here's my
contribution to the conversations as I run by hearing only snippets...

Everyone- Aaaggh! Stop with the moving/packing/unpacking. I grab a few
minutes on here to get away from that, though at least we a) finally
moved into the house we've been re-habbing since June 4th, 2000, b) are
mostly moved out of the stereotype with holes in the floor that we've
spent the last six years in (with shotgun wielding, "I'd kill in the
name of my God" relation behind us who randomly thinks I'm Satan), and
c) are vaguely unpacked enough to function.

Beer- bad. White wine good. Mushrooms, great substitute for meaty taste
in veggie food.

Hey, all the newish people.

Michelle- don't be embarrassed about the Trek thing. I still reverently
move a Kirk/Spock WallBusters poster from the 70's that I will soon have
archivally matted as pop art. Oh, the Andy Warhol exhibit is coming to
the KMA (Knoxville Museum of Art). The current one has Maxfield Parrish.
Ummm...

Neil- Vegetarian? No more meat rolls of dubious meat product (I
suspected pork, which don't eat, but, only for you)?
I'm not sure if I meant the above how it sounds.

Peeps- evil like clowns. But what do I know, I eat Jell-O raw.

Sex with stuffed animals? No thanks, I'm full. But I did have some
interesting photos taken... never mind.

Oh, hey, NightWalker.

JaNell, hoping to make Lexington and Dayton.

(Spell checking gave me the interesting option of Kirk/S pock for
Kirk/Spock, and no reference at all for Warhol and Maxfield. Go figure.)

Lemon in wine? Please tell me they don't do that, Matej. Peeps are an
Easter-holiday candy in the States: basically, baby-chick-shaped
marshmallows covered in colored sugar. They come in bunny shape, too, and
there are versions less widely sold for other holidays like Halloween and
Christmas.

I don't envy me for seeing Neil at signings because what do you get?: five
minutes chat with Mr. Exhausted Though Charming. I would never dump Neil
but it has informed my philosophy: no more stars for friends, you almost
never get to just hang with them. Neil is the only star who gets to be my
friend.

I've been reading the journal for a while, but just got around (found
the courage?) to register and post here...

Mostly just wanted to comment on the following:
"...I chatted to Dolores, his assistant, and signed her hardback of
Sandman: THE WAKE. She hasn't read it yet, as she says if she does
then the story will be over.)"

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who hasn't read The Wake,
and feels the same way I do. :-) As long as I ignore that book on the
shelf, the story is alive and well in my version of reality. (And I now
know there is at least one person out there who has a similar enough
version of reality to not look at me oddly when I declare that!)

I'm going to go back to lurking now...

Sure you can. It's just not generally considered particularly polite. Or a

Hi people. ^_^ In Philly for my sis' graduation... 15 hours from HK
direct to NYC, then an hour by train, which is an improvement on 14
hours to Chicago then another 3 or 4 hours plus transit. Kinda oozy and
jetlagged, but have hit a bookstore already! (Okay, so my sis was
picking up her cap and gown there.) Man do I miss real bookstores. Too
bad I can't stay here till June 19th... maybe I should consider
chaining myself to a boulder or something.

Shawn and Kelly - Welcome! ^_^

Neil - Happy travelling! And which issue of Entertainment Weekly
should we be looking for? (Btw, were you going to send me your last
Christmas story thing...? ^_^;)

I call myself an Erynn. Neilpern...hmmm...

well, my day at work today didn't go any better (any cool new job
ideas anyone?) But i was very happy when I went to Wallyworld to get
beanbags, they didn't have any, they didn't have any futons I liked so
I got a giant canopy garden swing. Oh what fun! (I'm sure, too, that
the cats will have too much fun with it.)

Neil- No, Michelle doesn't have to do that (although I'm sure she
could, as she seems to know damn near everyone.) If I get my loan, then
I'll have a car, if I don't plan B is to get a donkey. Don't know.
Nah, I have some friends that will take us. I don't think they've ever
read you before. I'm trying to change that.
As for book reservations, I'm checking out my options. I have no
credit card, so I'll probably con the above mentioned friends to take
me there too. I will have The Book, don't worry.
Tell Michelle she has to record a new song for us to hear to get the
Hungarian Stardust.
Have fun in Brazil!

Martha- I think it'd be cool to have at least one "star" friend.
Probably wouldn't want much more than that.

I'd love to be friends with David Bowie. I wouldn't even mind if I
only got to see him once or twice a year. Just to say: "I'm friends
with David Bowie" Ahhh, the sound of that. It'd be even cooler if he
lived next door. In reality, most stars are stuck up assholes that are
disappointing when you meet them. Except for a few, like Neil, of
course. But he's the busiest of them all. He's all like: "Um, yes, I
woke up, read a 375 page novel in the bath, wrote a new story, finished
the first draft of a screenplay, wrote a treatment, read to my
daughter, wrote some blurbs for people, signed 5,000 copies of book
covers, researched the origins of ancient literature and other cool
things that not many other people know about, hung out with nifty
friends, went to England, then France, went to some parties, made a few
posts on The Well and the AG blogger, wrote another story and then off
to bed."
I don't know how he does it.
Must be the peeps.

By the way, my "Being An Experiment" thing with packing didn't go
well. I woke up at 3:00am in a box. I managed to not pack anything
except myself, I guess.
