A very interesting post from Noah Weiner on DeadNet Central:

Noah Weiner - 11:17am Dec 10, 2002 PDT (#2205 of 2226) Mark
his rainbow colors blended...

I went to see David Gans do his acoustic show on Sunday night here in
Chicago. Had dinner with him before hand. David is a really warm guy. I had
no idea what to expect out of his show other than having heard that he does
some cool things with a digital loop so he can solo over his own playing.

The music was great. David has this wonderful mix of emotions that come from
his songs. They made me think, while his playing let me disconnect at times
and simply be. The utterly improv jam out of "Psycho Killer" with The Kissers
(a three piece band that sat in with him for some tunes) on stage with him
was haunting and lovely. He has also worked up a "Mexicali Blues" at a slowed
tempo, probably more in line with what Barlowe intended in writing it back in
1971-72. It gives the song the chance to show the main character in a more
stark light, and he ain't too nice a fellow.

And almost nothing could have prepared me for his end game: "Who Killed Uncle
John" was like having a cathartic cleansing of some wound I had let go
unwashed. His muse flagrantly showing itself full front in those lyrics. Who
can deny the strength of that song? I read the lyrics months ago, but never
was I ready for the song itself. Made me feel and think things I honestly
have not let myself go through in these last 7 years. Gans aims a spotlight
on every person and element of the GD family/world and draws out the painful
response from each of "It was not I who stopped his heart. I serve the man
who served his art." It gives me shivers even now to write it.

"Like A Dog>Terrapin" took things to another level. "Like A Dog" is a tune he
collaborated on with Hunter. Very nice. And the way he slid into Terrapin
caught me so off guard as to lock me to the chair (not that I was up dancing
and twirling, mind you). Having been thoroughly impressed with his artful use
of that digital delay gizmo all night, the way he crafted Terrapin with
multi-loops was a stunning climax.

If you ever get the chance to see David live, do so. It's a really good show,
relaxed, and from the heart.

It was a lot of fun, despite being in a sports bar. If your friends
attended, they did not approach me. But it was damn cold that night, so they
were wise to stay home.

I know that one friend, Greg, didn't make it -- he got delayed at a
meeting in Chicago. But I think friends of his made it, and possibly
his wife too.

Glad to hear the gig went well. If another tour's headed that way, let
me know. As I mentioned in a previous post, my Rockford friends say
there are nicer, better places for you to play in town.

Last night I opened for the Dark Star Orchestra at the Fillmore.

It was GREAT FUN! Successful as marketing, too: lots of people heard me who
didn't know I could do all that stuff. People came up to me afterwards and
told me they really like my lyrics. Mountain Girl asked me to email her the
words to "Surely You Jest."

The set list was a combination of what I really wanted to do and what I have
enjoyed doing with the DSO folks in the past. Last summer John and Lisa and
I had great fun with "Helplessly Hoping," "In My Life," and "Find the Cost of
Freedom," so last night we did "In My Life" (extra sweet because Rita was
with me and that's a song that Eric and Darlis sang at our wedding).

I opened with "Who Killed Uncle John," with a few dozen folks at the rail and
the room beginning to fill up. I could see lots of people really getting
into the song. I followed it with "Lazy River Road," which is a real sweet
spot for me these days -- and toward the end of it, I looked down and there
was MG at the rail, beaming up at me. (Later, she asked me whose song that
was!)

Lisa and I ran "Looks Like Rain" before the show, but the phrasing was not as
tight as I would have liked. So when we were up there in front of an
audience, we both put a huge amount of concentration into it, just locked in,
romancing the phrasing out of each other. It was an extraordinary ex-
perience, and I think the result was pretty sweet. John played a nice piano
sound on his guitar synth, and then delivered a nice Jerryesque solo. Lisa
and I also had a sweet vocal jam at the end, intertwining long lines, mostly
without words.

"White Rabbit" was a request from varios DSO folks who said Lisa had really
nailed it when she sang it with the Tricksters recently.

I showed "Surely You Jest" to everyone individually before the show, but the
version we played on stage was the first rehearsal. About 32 bars into it,
we had a really nice groove. Really nice. (I'd do a little bit of editing
on the tape, because some of the soloists found themselves with one more
chorus than they were expectinng to play.) Right into a fast "River and
Drown," which these guys know really well, and closing with "Down to Eugene."
It is such a thrill to play with people who really dig my songs. And a
thrill to play electric, which I don't get to do nearly often enough these
days.
