I don't mind tellin' you, this is a very good band.  Lots of Dead songs and
jams, and some damn fine originals, too.

This is a family reunion of a bunch of Berkeley freaks -- the crowd from
which the Reptiles sprang in the mid-'70s -- but everyone is welcome.  It's a
big place!

It was a great party -- a reunion of many old friends -- but the music was a
bit rusty.

David, I've let some friends in Rockford know of your upcoming gig. I
figure you guys could get together and have a good time telling lies. 
  

    

What in the world do I have to lie about?

(Seriously: thanks for spreading the word.  This will be my first visit to
Rockford.)
  

    
Parts of the town are very nice -- there's an ongoing restoration of
some older city blocks. The Rock River sleepwalks through. A
couple-three very good restaurants have opened, and some antique
boutiques, too.

Rockford's one of those small Middle America cities possessing some
charm that's missed by those who focus narrowly on the coasts. St.
Charles is another nice Illinois city (very nice, actually). Iowa City
is pretty. Ann Arbor, Michigan, is a great town. Petosky, Michigan,
too. 

Rockford is the home town of Cheap Trick, by the way. 
  

    

I thought they were from Champaign!  No, that's REO Speedwagon.

Anyway, this being a TOUR, I won't have much time to poke around.
  

    
David, my friends in Rockford tell me they're spreadin' the news --
you may have a nice crowd at the gig. 

They note that there are a couple of places in town they think are
nicer and more intimate than LT's; I'll get you the names and contact
info, should a future tour take you to northwestern Illinois.

Also, this advice: "He needs to be aware he's going to freeze his ass
off. It's supposed to get down to 10 tonight (Tuesday), and the
forecast for next week is 20s and 30s."
  

    
I am planninbg for cold weather.  What worries me is driving in it.
  

    
Yeah, a real challenge for us Mediterranean Climate wusses. Are you
driving to Rockford from Chicago? You can take an interstate the whole
way, which may be the safest route in snowy weather. (Be prepared for
tolls -- 40 cents every 20 miles or so, as I recall; $1.60 total,
Chicago-Rockford, last time I drove it, which was earlier this year).

Yes, I'll be driving from (and back to) Chicago.  But if all goes well, the
driving will actually be done by <dwaite>.
