It's a single CD but it is awesome. David's work as the opener was
stellar as usual. The opener the 2nd night was an interesting woman
named Lori B. She was a lot of fun. I had a wonderful conversation
with her after her show and when I emailed her a week later to ask her
to put me on her email list she remembered talking to me. I have meant
to see her live again but the dates of her shows have not worked for

SATURDAY, September 4, 2004:

I made some grave miscalculations about driving distances and times for this
weekend's trip.

I was invited to play a private party outside of Portland, and I took the
opportunity to set something up with a guy that my old friend Alan Mande
introduced me to in far-northern California.

I left Oakland at noon on Friday, drove to Eugene for the night, and then
drove the rest of the way to Rainier OR yesterday, a little over two and a
half hours. Given that I am expected in Dunsmuir (just south of Mt Shasta
City) at 4pm Sunday, I realized that I couldn't stay at my hosts's house
Saturday night unless I was willing to get up at 7 am to hit the road. So I
got on the net and booked a room in Eugene for Saturday night.

I was sorry to leave the party. I watched it grow -- when I arrived in the
early afternoon on Saturday, there were a couple dozen people who had already
arrived and camped out the night before. Drew's property is 14 acres on a
hillside above the Columbia River, and he has built a frisbee golf course
there. He has built frisbee golf courses elsewhere, too -- it's his hobby,
and many of his friends are way into it, too.

I wandered around taking pictures --- big black bees hunkered down in big
pink flowers for hours on end, stuffing their satchels with pollen; a colony
of red-headed ants moving massive pieces of straw around; dogs, dogs, dogs!
-- and getting to know the party tribe.

They were roasting a pig in the ground out near the site of Friday night's
sweat lodge.

By five o'clock, there were closer to 75 people on the grounds, including
several kids and one grandchild. A big batch of spaghetti was being made to
feed those who don't eat pig, and a cake was on hand to celebrate three
events at once: a birthday, an anniversary, and I'm not sure what the third
thing was.

June and Joren Rushing, musician friends from down the Oregon coast, arrived.
 The grandchild I referred to above is theirs, and they were meeting him for
the first time; their son lives near the party side and the Rushings live a
couple hundred miles away. I was able to get some pictures of grandpa and
the babe. Joren plays a Turner Renaissance guitar, too; his was given to him
by Robert Hunter!

The pig was unearthed and shredded next to the pit. Huge platters of pork
were taken to the house, but just about everybody who eats meat grabbed a
steaming piece of it right off the carcass. I found it rather gross, but I
have been reconsidering my carnivorosity somewhere down in my gut for quite
some time.

Dinner was a joyous occasion.

Oh, there was a collective tie-dyeing project, too: a banner that I heard was
for the stage, but it was given to the Rushings as an anniversary present.
They play this party every year, and every year the tribe celebrates their
anniversary

This is the sixth annual labor day gathering here. Drew Seip is the host,
and he seems to be the energy center of this clan. It was a great warm
scene, and I felt very welcome and very comfortable even though I knew no one
when I got here.

I felt completely at ease and inspired for my 90-minute set:

 Down to Eugene
 Our Lady of the Well->
 When I Paint My Masterpiece
 Lazy River Road
 jam->
 China Cat jam->
 One Time One Night->
 Blue Roses
 Black Peter
 Surely You Jest
 Terrapin->
 Attics of My Life
 Who Killed Uncle John?
 Mexicali Blues
 Hooker River
 Brokedown Palace

I am getting the hang of this new equipment and the "undo" feature of my
updated Loop Station is a liberating factor. I can try things and not ruin
the jam if they don't work out. But mostly, things work out. Having a pedal
that can sweep up or down an octave is very cool for psychedelic jamming, and
of course so is the wah-wah pedal.

I wound up sitting in with the Rushings for most of their first set.

I was really sorry to leave. I had met so many nice people -- middle-aged
Deadheads, people who were very happy to be in that place with those friends.
 It was like the party at Audrey and Dan's, but more intimate because almost
everyone there had social roots that go back decades.

I made it to Eugene by 2 and was asleep by 3, and awake at 8:30.

I said earlier that I had made some miscalculations about time and distance.
For some stupid reason I booked my rental car to return Monday at 11, and I
also accepted a last-minute invitation to play a block party in Oakland
Monday afternoon. So today I go to Dunsmuir - a four-hour drive -- play from
4:20 til 7 or so, and then drive the rest of the way back to Oakland.

The gig in Dunsmuir is a backyard BBQ at the home of Eric Siems, who promotes
shows in the Mt Shasta and Ashland areas. Alan Mande introduced us, and Eric
thought this would be a low-risk way to introduce me to his community (as
opposed to booking a show in a venue on short notice on a holiday weekend, in
a rough season in the music biz, etc). I'm all for it. We'll pass the hat,
and I'll sell a few CDs, and when I come back up here in November with Free
Peoples, he'll be able to book us with confidence.

It's a shitload of driving in a short time span, but I am very, very happy I
did this. Yesterday was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, a very good
performance from a musical standpoint, and good for the word-of-mouth. I
sold quite a bit of stuff, too.

One especially enthusiastic new fan is a woman (a friend of the Rushings')
who lives in Eugene and promised to bring a lot of friends out when I play
there again. I could see her digging my performance, dancing and singing
along much of the time, so I trust that her enthusiasm is genuine. That sort
of thing is a great investment for a guy like me.

SUNDAY, September 5, 2004:

This morning I got up in Eugene, had some coffee and cereal, and hit the road
for Dunsmuir.

The gig was scheduled for the promoter's back yard - basically a freebie to
introduce me to the community and drum up some interest in a "real" gig in
the future.

This morning I got email - sent to all who responded to the invitation to the
show - saying it was going to take place in the city park.

I got to the park at around 3, I think. There's a stage at the bottom of a
sloping lawn. behind the performer are a road and a parking lot and the
Sacramento River. A beautiful place for a show.

Eric had put up a nice sound system. There were a couple dozen people when I
arrive, and more showed up as time went by. I had been listening to an
advance CD of the new Garcia release, "After Midnight," so I played the title
track (with a really great jam into an instrumental "Eleanor Rigby" tucked
into it) over the PA before taking the stage to do my show.

There was a lot of really great energy in this place. The audience consisted
of old Deadheads, middle-aged Deadheads, younger hippies, quite a few kids,
and several dogs. I was in a GREAT mood, and I knew this was a day to honor
Jerry and the Dead so I started with a "Dark Star" jam. Listening back to it
on the way home I could hear all the little glitches and clatters throughout
the set, but this was the very definition of 'ragged but right": the circuit
was closed and the juice was flowing.

 Dark Star jam->

 Sitting in Limbo->

After "Brokedown Palace" I was thinking about winding the show down, it being
around 90 minutes in. Someone called out that dinner as ready -- turns out
someone has been grilling chicken, fish etc. down the road, and there was a
nice potluck feed for everyone to enjoy.

A young guy sang some songs while we ate, but my attention was on the
conversations I was having over dinner. One woman described the spiritual
experience she had during my set, which had to do with getting back in touch
with Jerry after having lost him in the '80s when the band was distracted and
the audiences were full of talkative drunks. She told me she could feel the
love Jerry has for me and she thanked me for inhabiting his songs and keeping
them alive.  That felt good.

I hadn't planned on playing another set, and it was getting dark, but Eric
brought out a couple of stage lights and invited me to play some more, and of
course I was happy to do so.

 Our Lady of the Well->
 I Bid You Good Night->
 Leave Me
 Echolalia
 Stella Blue->
 Blue Roses
 Trying
 ~
 Falling Star

This weekend was not financially profitable -- I probably just about broke
even, counting merchandise sales -- but it was as spiritually nourishing and
musically satisfying as any performances I've ever done. I made a lot of new
friends and fans, participated in two really powerful community events,
expanded my skills as a performer and improviser, and laid some groundwork
for future gigs.

I am really excited about this Friday's show at with the Rowan Brothers Rios
in Rio Nido (on the Russian River). I have admired Chris and Lorin's work
since I first heard them many years ago. We will perform separately (me
first), and then we'll all sing together at the end of the evening. If this
goes well, we may do more dates together in the future. (And we're all
thrilled to have our pal Barry Sless along on pedal steel and guitar!)

I'm also very happy to be hitting the road with Free Peoples in November.
We'll be performing in Northern California, Oregon, and Washington starting
right after election day (I sure hope you're registered, and I sure hope you
VOTE!). The dates will be posted at dgans.com and freepeoples.com as soon as

I'm doing three shows in the Northwest with a terrific Bay Area band called
FREE PEOPLES. They continue to quote the blurb I gave them for their first
album: Free Peoples kicks a certain kind of retro ass." An acoustic quartet
with a sound that strides somewhere between bluegrass and western swing, like
Dan Hicks without the sardonic lyrics. Great grooves, great songs, great
playing. Sample Free Peoples at http://www.freepeoples.com and please come
hear us!

Then I play three shows in the Mt. Shasta-Ashland OR area later in the week,
before driving home to the Connecticut Yankee for a benefit for RockTheEarth.

I hope to see you there. If you know people in these regions, please urge
them to come to the show! Word of mouth is everything in this business.

Greetings and happy new year!

I've got some major music action here at home in the next ten days. A
northwest tour later this month is still being confirmed; southwest in
early Feb; southeast in March; probable midwest tour in April; and
further plans are in development.

A last-minute fill-in gig at Sweetwater in Mill Valley December 15
turned into a great event in front of a sold-out house: Bob Weir
played half a dozen songs with Henry Kaiser and me; Chris and Lorin
Rowan, Pete Sears, Corinne West, Rik Elswit, Eric Rawlins, and bassist
Josh Zucker also played. Sound man Andy Slote got inspired and pitched
the Sweetwater management on the idea of a monthly "Invitational"
event, and they agreed to give it a try. The next one is coming right
up: this Thursday, January 6, with David Nelson, Stevie Coyle of the
Waybacks, Suzy Thompson, Rik Elswit, Eric Rawlins, Josh Zucker, and a
couple of surprise guests.

I hope to see you are one or more of these shows. Please tell your
