Greetings!  Here is the current calendar, which covers my impending southwest
tour, a bunch of Bay Area dates (including a rare appearance by The Reptiles,
a group of friends who have been playing together for thirty years now), a
March southeast tour that still may have a couple more dates to fill in, and
one nice new addition to the calendar for July: The Master Musicians Festival
in Kentucky in July.

Just this morning I found out that a possible gig in late April isn't going
to happen, so I am going to try to put together a midwest tour for that time
frame. More spring and summer adventures are in the works! Stay tuned.

David Newman is designing posters for The Invitational, a monthly jam at the
Sweetwater that began with a last-minute gig in December. If you go to my web

posters and links to larger files that you can print out and distribute if
you're so inclined. There's a poster for the March 12 Reptiles show that you

February 19 is the annual KPFA Grateful Dead marathon, and this one is
special because I will be celebrating my 20th anniversary in broadcasting.
The 16-hour event will be webcast via nugs.net, so you can listen in wherever
you are.  I have assembled a compilation CD of performances from my KPFA
show, including contributions from Railroad Earth, Donna the Buffalo, David
Nelson and Friends, the Rowan Brothers, Shana Morrison and Roy ROgers, Bill
Kirchen, and lots more. Cover art (by Stanley Mouse!), track list, and sound

First, the big hometown news:

THE INVITATIONAL AT SWEETWATER:  Last December I did a last-minute gig at
Sweetwater in Mill Valley, California, filling in for a cancelled show.  The
club asked me to invite some friends, and we wound up with Bob Weir, Chris
and Lorin Rowan, Henry Kaiser, Corinne West, and others. We had so much fun
that the management (spurred by a suggestion from soundman Andy Slote)
invited me to do it every month.

We're calling it The Invitational.  We've done three so far, and they've been
great fun.  The February 17 edition featured Henry Kaiser, Eric Thompson, all
of the Dark Star Orchestra, and surprise guests including Martin Fierro,
Freddie Roulette, and David Nelson.  Bob Cogswell has recorded all of these
events so far, and they are available for download in various online
archives.

This month's Invitational is scheduled for Thursday, March 10, and will
include singer-songwriters Corinne West and Michael Stadler along with Suzy
Thompson, Eric Rawlins, Rik Elswit, and Josh Zucker. Surprise guests are
expected, too.

Jim Page and other songwriters will join me on April 21, and I have some
interesting plans and fantasies for future events.  Stay tuned.

Hello, ganstraders!

I heard that Steve Rippey joined the list yesterday - welcome!!

Steve was witness to my little meltdown in North Carolina - I picked up some
sort of bug earlier in the tour, and struggled through a show and a half
before winding up in the ER for fluids and electrolytes.  Nothing serious,
but I was pretty weak for a while there.

There aren't going to be a lot of recordings coming from this particular
tour.  The Suwannee SpringFest got hit by a massive rainstorm early in the
morning of the first day, making all three of the outdoor venues impossible
to use.  Some of the sound equipment was lost to water damage, too.   The
production teams did a phenomenal job of getting the show up in alternative
settings, and everyone wound up having a pretty damn fine time after all.

My mainstage set disappeared into the void, replaced by two late-night
tweeners on the second stage in the music hall.  My Old Florida Stage
performance was moved to the Pickin' Shed, where I found out at the last
possible moment that there was no amplification!  Fortunately, a guy from the
band before me volunteered his acoustic guitar, so I was able to perform
albeit without my usual array of electronic assistants.  That set did get
recorded -- by me on my portable DAT with the tiny stereo mic, and by Jim Roe
on video.  I sent my recording to Molly, who will get it online soon.
Haven't gotten the other recording from Jim yet, but I expect it will sound
much better than mine even if you don't care about the picture.

My two music hall tweeners, and the looping workshop I did with Arvid Smith,
were recorded, but somehow my M1 was set to the LP sampling rate (32 KHz) and
I haven't yet managed to get a clean playback of them, let alone a transfer
to another medium.

I had a fine time in Athens with Cosmic Charlie, but I haven't reviewed that
tape yet.

Friday, April 1 was when things started getting weird.  I got sick the night
before, while staying with a friend in Spartanburg.  I made it to Concord for
the show at the George Washington Bookstore with Nth Degree and Tom
Constanten, but I was pretty weak and woozy.  Rather than play a set of my
own and then sit in with Nth Degree, as planned, I took it very easy and got
up for a song or two in between bouts of sitting or lying down.  I had a
great time with that swell bunch of players, but I didn't play much.  There
was a guy recording with microphones at the start of the night, and I gave
him my DAT deck.  At the end of the evening that guy was gone, and I
discovered that my tape stopped  at about 85 minutes, right in the middle of
"Rubin and Cherise."  Guess the anonymous recordist had had enough and left
the building!   The recording I do have is weird - audience tape for the Nth
Degree and TC sets, and then overmodulated soundboard for what there is of my
performance.

Saturday night, April 2, I was in Carrboro with Matt and Miner and their band
Cromagnatism.  I had felt better during the day, thinking I had just had a
really nasty case of indigestion.  My friends and I went to the Weaver Street
Market for some dinner before the Temple Ball show; I knew I wasn't out of
the woods yet when I couldn't find anything in that deli that I thought would
sit well in my stomach.  I wound up with a small package of inari-zushi
(sweetened rice in a fried-tofu shell) and a cup of ginger tea.

I was in no condition to start the show, so I asked Matt and Miner to play a
set.  After a while I got up and played three songs with them, but I had to
sit down again.  It must have been a good 45 minutes before I felt strong
enough to try another song; I did "Surely you Jest" with the full band, and
they tell me I played and sang really powerfully -- but I was in bad shape,
and I told the audience I had to go to the ER.   (John recorded this show
w/microphones; I pugged my deck into the wrong place on the soundboard, so
every time the sound guy soloed a channel that's what I got on my recording -
useless!).

This was the night UNC won their semi-final game, so the hospitals in Chapel
Hill were expected to be full of people who burned themselves jumping over
bonfires, etc.  My friends John and Beth wisely too me back to Durham
(stopping at a Waffle House for a cup of ice for the patient), and the ER
there was blessedly quiet.

They pumped two liters of fluid and electrolytes into me and gave me some
Imodium.  By the time we got out of there, Daylight Saving Time had kicked in
and it was about 5:30 in the morning.  We passed two people sitting on a curb
waving a Tarheels flag at passersby.

I had to cancel my performance at Mama Bear and Papa Bear's place outside
Greensboro.  I spent Sunday, Monday, and most of Tuesday in bed at Beth and
John's house, eating applesauce, rice and dry toast washed down with
Gatorade.  Yum!

I made it home okay, and now I am feeling fine.  What an adventure!

Oh, there was one other show, before SpringFest, in Tallahassee with Hal
Month's Dead Keys and Friends.  That was a fine show - Hal and I really click
ass a piano-guitar duet, and the band did a fine job on my new song "Every
Kick in the Ass Is a Shove in the Right Direction" (written with Lorin Rowan
on March 1).  I haven't reviewed that tape yet, either, but if it sounds good
I'll make it available.


So that's the news from lake WTFIGO?  Jim Page is coming i this weekend and
we're doing three shows together (including The Invitational at Sweetwater on
Thursday, April 21, with Peter Kaukonen and Mario DeSio also on the bill).

The May Invitational will feature a temporary band we're calling Guilty
Pleasures: myself; Klyph Black of the Zen Tricksters on bass and vocals; Rob
Barraco, formerly of ZT and The Dead, on keyboards and vocals; Barry Sless on
pedal steel and guitar; and a drummer to be named shortly.  We're playing
Sweetwater on May 5, TBA on May 6, Mt Shasta City on May 7, and Sebastopol on
May 8.

My summer is starting to fill up with excellent festival gigs:  Laytonville
CA in mid-June; Nelson Ledges, Ohio on July 4; Schwagstock in Missouri July
8-9; Master Musicians Festival July 14-16; Nelson Ledges again and another
big festival (I can't say which one yet) in August.

Goldie Rush (1946-2005)



I got the news at 9 am or so EST and called Rita a few minutes later to tell
her.  I hung out in the room  for a while, just being with this terrible
fact; I posted about it here in the WELL, etc., and then I packed up my stuff
and checked out of the hotel at 11, got in the car and headed for Atlanta.

I-75 has always been a nasty route in terms of food and coffee, but I spotted
a sign for a Starbuck's in Tifton.  This is a good thing!

I gassed up in Tifton, then went to Starbuck's.  Eschewing the drive-up
window, I went inside and ordered a soy latte, gave the barista my name, and
then stood by the bar to await my beverage.

There was a man standing at the bar drinking an espresso, the way people do
in France.

He turned to me and said, in a thick French accent:  "Hello, David. Where's
Goldie at?"

I stood there, dumbfounded, trying to figure out if I knew him.

"Excuse me?"

"Where's Goldie at?"

Still unable to imagine how this man knew me or why he was asking me this
question at this moment... "I don't understand the question."

He smiled and said, "You know, David and Go-lee-at." Goliath!

I headed back out onto I-75, laughing and crying, and a few minutes later I
pulled myself together and called my dad to give him the news.

Goldie got a great sendoff on April 14, which would have been her 59th
birthday.  There was a tremendous amount of love and creativity brought to
bear on this parade and party, and it went off without a hitch.  Well, the
fire marshal made us hose down the Burning Woman before she was completely
consumed - but not before all our written farewells and expressions of love
were burned.

Goldie was there, her ashes in a beautiful gold gift box with gold ribbon.
The Art Police (Freddy and Zim) brought a golden dragon that some of you will
remember from GD Mardi Gras parades, and Goldie was borne on a throne that
had many other artifacts. There was a shrine in the Community Center, and
across the room was a table with dozens of photos from her life.  I was happy
to see a picture of Goldie and me from New Year's Eve - the night I wound up
singing for several hours, able to remember nearly every song anyone asked
for. There were gold balloons for the kids.  There were hundreds of silk
hankies handed out before the parade for us to wave as we walked.  There was
a brass band in black uniforms to lead us from the Village Green, through
tiny Stinson Beach, and into the hall.  Wavy led the ceremony, with brief
words at the Village Green and a stunning poem to get things started in the
circle at the Community Center.

Frankie Accardi read a poem that made everyone laugh and cry at the same time
- something about God running around backstage in Heaven saying, "I'm with
Goldie." I've asked her to post the text...

Ali was released from his incarceration in a forestry camp for the day,
escorted by a very discreet, street-clothes-clad sheriff, and it was really
touching to see him embraced by so man - his siblings in the GD family -
Sunshine, Annabelle, Trixie, Justin, Cole - and MG, and all of Goldie's pals.

People spoke who had known Goldie since she was nine years old, and I began
my story by confessing that I had known her "a mere 27 years."  I told the
story about my encounter with the Frenchman in Tifton, Georgia, and everyone
agreed that it was a tweak from the Bardo.

The party went on for a couple of hours, with a couple hundred people telling
stories, laughing, eating, watching the slide show that Don Pearson put on on
Goldie's magnificent Apple Cinema Display. Rita made a big batch of cole slaw
from a recipe by Eric Gower. (Goldie came to our house every Thursday to take
care of my business, and I usually went out to get us something for lunch.
Often, it was "sandwich kits" from A.G. Ferrari.  Goldie loved their fried
artichoke hearts, and usually requested ham, cheese, and some cole slaw.) I
spoke with a few people I have not had smooth relations with over the years,
opened the door (in myself) to the possibility of forgiving a guy who
committed a heartless act of treachery during the time I was being kicked out
of the Lesh scene.  Laughed, listened to stories, looked at a hundred
pictures of Goldie from all the times of her life.

I was asked to provide live music, but it was never terribly clear what
anyone expected.  So of course, it all turned out just fine. I had asked Eric
and Suzy Thompson, but Suzy said only she would be able to make it.  Then the
night before the event I heard that only Eric was going to be coming. Then on
the day, both of them showed up.  Also on board was bassist Josh Zucker. We
didn't rehearse, but I did send MP3s of a few things.  I put "Box of Rain"
into a much lower key, and asked the players to be ready to play "For a
Dancer" and "Brokedown Palace."  We also played "Iko Iko," "Black Rat Swing,"
"That's Real Love," "I Saw Her Standing There," and I can't remember what-all
else. Audrey Auld Mezera, who made a big impression on me and the other
partygoers on New Year's Eve, joined us for three songs (including a song for
Goldie that she had written the night before). Oh, and "Happy Birthday" to
Goldie as a big cake was brought out with candles ablaze.

Maria Muldaur got there much later than we had expected.  There was some
discussion about whether she was going to sing or not, but she had her fiddle
with her and she and Eric and Suzy played a nice medley of fiddle tunes. Then
Josh and I returned to the stage and and we all did "I'll Fly Away" - during
which I shared a microphone with Maria!  The DG of 1974 would have peed in
his pants if this had happened to him; the DG of 2005 was pretty jazzed, for
that matter.  We did another old-timey song whose title I can't remember,
featuring a nice vocal duet by Maria and Suzy, and then Maria closed the
afternoon by singing "Amazing Grace" a cappella, with all of us singing
along.

After the party at the Community Center closed down, many of us repaired to
the house at Seadrift.  This was the Leshes' beach house; they are planning
to tear it down and rebuild, so they invited Goldie to live there rent-free
while they went through the design, permit, etc. process.  This was an act of
phenomenal generosity.

It was there that Goldie lived for the last several months of her life.  We
visited her there several times, including New Year's Eve - when another
Burning Woman ceremony was completed without intervention by the authorities.
Chris and Lorin Rowan, Barry Sless and I went out there one afternoon to play
Beatle song after Beatle song, with an audience of Goldie and a dozen or so
of her friends.

She had a grand time those last six months, but we all feel cheated because
we were told she had a year.  People visited her, and sometimes people made
plans to visit her that she canceled at the last minute because she wasn't up
for it.  She never ever told me this was terminal, and I allowed myself to
believe it wasn't.  She kept it light, kept the focus on the truth and fun
and not on her pain.  If she felt fear, she kept it to herself. Goldie went
out in style, and with great grace, surrounded by people who loved her and
will for the rest of their days.

I made it through the parade and the party and the music, just being in the
moment and doing what felt right. I finally lost it at the beach house,
listening to Frankie Accardi telling the story of Goldie's last two days.  As
she described the passing of our dear friend, I realized that I cannot
imagine the human spirit as a light that dims, flickers and is extinguished
when the body dies.  I kept struggling to imagine where she is now.  It is
inconceivable to me that this person has ceased to exist.

MG told us of something characteristically brilliant, sweet and unpoetic that
Bear told her about how Goldie's soul will persist on earth.  I will post the
exact quote when I get it from her.

I can tell you the shape of the hole in my spirit, but I can't tell you its
depth.

Just back from two delightful weeks on Kauai with my wife and two good
friends.  Helped KKCR with their fundraiser, played some music, swam with
turtles, schmoozed with horses, took lots of photos (

batteries in a most enjoyable way.  Now, back to music!


This summer I've been invited to some great festivals, and I'll be filling in

I want to call your attention to MagnoliaFest Midwest, July 22-24 at the Bill
Monroe Music Park & Campground in Bean Blossom, Indiana.  This is the first
midwest venture by the Magnolia Music people, who put on the Suwannee
SpringFest and MagnoliaFest in Live Oak, Florida every year.  They've been
very good to me over the years, and they put on a very pleasant festival, so
I want this new venture to be a success for everybody's sake.  See

I'm staying close to home in June, playing Farmers' markets in Oakland and
Marin on June 11 and 12 respectively, and the Nomad Cafe w/ Mario DeSio on
the evening of June 11; the following weekend I'll be in Laytonville CA,
playing solo and also in a band called Rubber Souldiers with Chris and Lorin
Rowan, Josh Zucker, and Adam Perry.  The Rowans and I have been bonding over
Beatle songs for a while now, and we're happy to be doing a full set of those
great songs on the first night of what promises to be a very pleasant weekend
in Northern California.

Weather Wimps!  The Solstice Parade in Seattle goes on, rain or shine!

Most of the festivals I play are able to proceed when it rains - and I have
seen some HEAVY rains.  But this particular venue doesn't have its alternate
structures in place just yet.  Next time, they'll be able to deal with the
wet.
