Jouni- CONGRATULATIONS! What's the little guy's name?

Streak- That was the funniest thing I've read in a long while; I
wanted to put it in my AOL profile, which is full of Neil and
Christopher Walken quotes, but it just won't quite fit. It had me in
fits of laughter during which I couldn't breathe, and in which my arse
fell off.

Mary- Sorry. No offense meant. Actually, I did know the history,
with the fish depression and all (do fish get depressed? If a pilot
fish gets sad, does his light go out? I wonder...), and I agree that
fasting can be very spiritual, but I think what bothers me is the
forty-day block. I've almost nearly cut red meat out of my diet, just
because... well, I don't know why, really, but I feel really good about
it. It's not protesting, or vegetarianism, or anything I'm anal
about; it's just something I've so far enjoyed. Matter of fact, one of
my former professors runs a Zen retreat house here in Manhattan, and
I'm thinking of doing one of his weekends, full of silence and rice and
fasting and meditation, which sounds like a far more fun weekend to me
than one spent drinking in bars with friends. I hate bars, but that's
neither here nor there. It just seems that you shouldn't confine
fasting, and meditating, and you shouldn't set forty-day blocks for
periods of intense worship and then kinda just have the rest of the
year.

E-mail from Michaela:

JaNell - I suppose it must be worse for you - I mean, I am annoyed by these
stereotypes, but at least people can still go to Germany and see for
themselves what it is like. I guess it's not as easy to find the "real"
Native American culture. And well, I suppose you tend to sound slightly
"bookish" if you spend a lot of time reading a language while speaking it
only occasionally.

Ummm .. thanks for all the praise :) Reading is really a brilliant way of
learning a language if you already know the basics, Rebecca. Inspired by the
discussion on topic 104 I recently bought "Les mille et une nuits", because
I really need to brush up my French.

Blythe - seems as if our countries had something in common then. I didn't
realise that the fact that you took the land from the natives is still an
issue for most of you - on a personal level I mean. I am quite aware of my
country's history. Most people here I have talked to about the Third Reich
and all that still feel vaguely guilty - even if they weren't even born at
the time. This crops up repeatedly when I talk to people from somewhere else
about Germany. I guess that's why there's not a lot of pride in one's
country here - I probably wouldn't have mentioned it if you hadn't brought
it up, since I thought it might be a good idea to take the repeated advice
from foreign people (puzzled by the fact that my generation still feels they
had better shut up and feel properly ashamed of their country) and just let
it rest. But there you are. Being a good German (they make sure that you
won't ever forget at school), I cannot help but respond to your side note.
Oh, and what did you mean about European's ideas keeping you alien to your
ancestor's lands? You lost me there.

Congratulations, Jouni :))

Streak - *g* I totally agree with Mary - I love your last post.

Streak, I actually snorted (well, several times), and upset my cat. I
haven't done that (well, that violently) since the first time I read

E-mail from Margret:

American Gods is one of the feature selections in the Science Fiction
Book Club this month. You know, one of those books that you are sent if
you don't mail in the little card. So some people may be getting
American Gods whether they want it or not. Let's hope they take the time
to read it instead of sending it back. It is being sold for only
$12.98. I may have to stock up on some for Christmas gifts. Also this
month they are offering Emma Bull's War for the Oaks. They even devoted
an entire page to it. I will have to order that one as well, but first I
need to send back that last box of books they sent me because I didn't
mail back the little card. : )

Well, you take a couple days off, and look what happens. Babies are
born, and a planet have been carved into a mostly naked Neil....

Jouni--CONGRATULATIONS! I have never been a godmother before, and I
am truly touched and happy for you. You must post pictures when you
are able...and let us know the little one's name. YAY!

Streak--I really needed that laugh (rather that fit of laughter). A
lot. Thank you. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time...(okay,
it was yesterday when I watched Neil performing "Being An
Experiment..." on the "Live from the Aladin" tape...I hadn't heard/read
it before...but that's beside the point...) I wonder how much money
we would have to give to CBLDF to hear Neil read that...

So, I FINALLY ordered Martha's book...It took me long enough. Now I
am waiting semi patiently for its arrival...

Angelina.

ACK! That should read "and a planet HAS been carved into a mostly
naked Neil..." My grammar isn't that bad, I promise. I had changed
the sentence from plural to singular at the the last moment.........I
swear....however, any spelling problems you may come across are due to
terrible spelling on my part. One would think with all the reading I
do that I would be a bit better, but no.

Streak... what can I say that hasn't been said before... but ... maybe
I should just dye my hair black, shave the beard, throw on my leather
jacket and we can make a bootleg video of "Neil" in a smoky bar
drunkenly giving your soliloquy... (as if the thought that nobody
should say that would make it any less fun)

Jouni ... Congrats! Mercy, it seems like everyone is getting engaged,
buying houses, having babies... the world is full of grown-ups!

On a totally unrelated note, i stumbled into a used bookstore on my
lunch break today. They had a poster up for my June show and I popped
in to let them know that the show had closed some time back. While I
puttered about for a bit, I came across a 1965 copy of A.A. Milne's
"When We Were Very Young" which I purchased for the exorbitant price of
25 cents.

I am terribly pleased about this...

Dan - the idea of a Neil imposter reading that is great, but I think a
whole series of fans dressed (or cross-dressed) like Neil reading it
would be even better... we could cut in the best parts...

ohmygod... that could be hysterical... now, getting a bunch of us in
the Bay Area to do it would be easy... but how could we do it to
include all of us across the globe????

Oh wait... doesn't Todd McFarlane own the rights to the likeness of
Neil? What if he sues us?

One might think that Neil owns the rights to the likeness of Neil. Though
it's less a fear of lawsuit and more a fear that he'll never speak to us
again.

You're all barking mad. The lot of you.

Neil--Welcome back! What a perfect moment you chose to return ;-)

I think a fund raiser performance of that little monologue would raise
quite a packet.

And where did this bloody English accent come from?

Mary

P.S. Angelina--when & where did you get your vid? CBLDF hasn't shipped
mine yet. They like you better than me...<sigh>
