Squeaks, hrm, sorry about that time-wasting thing . . . hey, weren't
you the one who linked to Bejeweled on alt.fan.thingie? More time than
I care to think about went to that game. Maybe we're even now. heehee

Mary, Oooo, you got some neat stuff! I have a turntable, and records,
but no receiver, and so you can only hear the music if you bend down
and put your ear next to the turntable. I have an awesome three album
set of Fred Astaire that I haven't been able to listen to in a long
time. We should have a house warming party -- I can make a checkerboard
cake for it! Megan can make . . . um . . . Megan can decorate the
apartment! We could have tea and little school boys, and red wine, and
we'll toast to your going to CT, while we all secretly hope that you
don't!

Christy, thank you, and please do take me up on the drink. Come to
Chicago -- everybody's doing it.

E-mail from Christy Smith:

Mary -- Whoops, your post got there before mine did. (Having to post
through a middleman allows for major slippage.) Thanks for the reply, and
glad your rummage sale went well! I need a turntable....

Just watched the last three video clips. (OK, OK, maybe he _is_ still
terribly cute.) Ooh... I wonder... maybe someday, SOMEday, a back-story
of the Other Mother may come into literary existence? Maybe?? {:)

"There's always stuff going on, as kids, that we don't understand...."
I, too, liked that part about being a kid living in an adult world. It is
true, and Neil's got a better memory than most. Also, Neil, one thing
rather amused me. Whenever I am explaining a kid's point of view to
someone, I'm always a little surprised to find myself talking in the first
person. I am looking at the subject from the perspective I would have had
as a kid, after all, and it comes out in the language. So it was really
cool to see that you do the same thing!

Off to hunt down and kill whoever has my NYC photos. Well, maybe I won't
kill them, but only provided they produce the merchandise.

Hoping Not to be Frustrated Much Longer,
Christy

Won't that upset the new neighbors if you eat their kids?

notshakespeare: yes.

But mostly, we eat the chocolate and butter cookie kind (Petit
Ecolier), because LU makes the bestest cookies. I like the dark
chocolate ones, but the hazlenut are yummy as well.

Maure: oh! I have Tim Tams! Want 'em as your housewarming?

Mary: oooooooooh prezzies!

Tara, No, you eat the Tim Tams, we're not moving in until September
1st, and they may not be as yummy by then. Don't worry, though, I'll be
sure to get most of the food for our housewarming party from an
outside service. I wouldn't inflict my cooking on you, except for the
checkerboard cake. ;)

<<tiny little voice>> You have Tim-Tams?

Little schoolboys are yummy.

Particularly on the grill. ;-)

(And, yes, Tara , Maure and I are Orwen, Orddu & Orgoch from The Black
Cauldron. It's just that none of us can remember who's Orgoch.....)

Christy--don't feel too bad. Debbie just got her pictures back from
Horrorcon, and that was in April. I understand there's a few amusing
ones of Gene Wolfe talking, and Neil laughing. I personally hope she
got at least one of Neil losing it because Gahan Wilson is mad. I
didn't envy him the job of trying to share a stage with Mr. Wilson.
Just trying to keep a straight face would have been too much work for
me. It was much more fun to just sit back & watch.

"Just how exactly does one suck a fuck?"

I broke down and bought the Donnie Darko DVD yesterday so that I can
watch it 50 more times. For those of you who have a DVD player, watch
the Cunning Visions infomercial with the commentary. Let's just say I
had strawberry daiquiri shooting out of my nose by minute two. Gotta
love Jake. I conquered the website too. I'm so proud of myself.

Oh Happy day! I just got the best rejection letter ever. They said
that they loved my story, but that it didn't quite fit their magazine.
They continued to compliment me and said that it was "very fine
writing". Yay! So I guess I'm getting better:)Unless they were merely
drunk...

Danw- Please give me back my shoes. I swear to god. I went looking for
my favorite clogs today and they're missing! I tore the whole damn
house apart looking for them and they're nowhere. It's as if they never
existed at all.

4 days 5 hours 32 min until I get a month vacation! Wooo!

Er...best not to think about it...

Oh- Erynn is a slippery sprite this evening. *smile. That DVD is next
on my list. Can't wait. ^_^

Christy- glad you enjoyed the quote! Twain definately has a hand on
those "american proverbs". And I've got still got a few tucked up
around here. Good luck on the pictures. I definately wanna see 'em.

Whew!

I've just waded my way through the volumes of posts since last week! I
was very nearly overwhelmed by the natives early on, fought my way
free, nearly landed in quicksand further up the trail, snuck past a few
very large crocodiles, climbed the cliff face, fought a few ROUS's,
and now here I am!

Well, at least, that's what the past week -feels- like. With somewhat
mixed feelings about the whole business, I found myself laid-off last
week. At this point, I've decided it is a Good Thing, and have broken
the path towards a unknown, new job!

Re: Sci-Fi - My mother is an english teacher, so the books we had
around the house tended to be literary classics, and the various
children's books my sister and I had.

It was around the tender age of 11 that my sister handed me the very
first Dragonlance novel and said "Read this, you'll like it!" She's
also the one that taught me D&D, at an even younger age, which I
immediately became enamored of. I've always had a pretty fantastic
imaginative streak that's tended towards dragons and faeries and the
like.

So, I didn't -really- get into Science Fiction until after high
school, after years and years of Xanth, Dragonlance, and any other good
or mediocre fantasy I could get my hands on. I only really dipped my
toes into SF a little, until I met my husband - who insisted I read
such tasty books as _Stranger In A Strange Land_ and the Martian
Chronicles. These days, I still tend towards fantasy, but I do love a
good SF novel just as much!

Siozie - Sorry to hear about the job, but it you're fine with it, then
it's a <martha stewart on> GOOD THING <martha stewart off>. ;)

I read the Dragonlance series, and started with "Chronicles of the
Twins." Spent several years reading every paperback published, but
eventually the law of diminishing returns kicked in and I gave it up.
People who read Xanth probably experienced the same thing.

Anyone notice William Safire tackling the origin of the word "Blog" in
his column "On Language" in last Sunday's NY TIMES? "Do a million hits
make a word?" The concept of blogs representing free speech in its
purest and most uncensored form. Then he went on to discuss "Props."
As in give me my "propers," a.k.a..R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Jeeze...I think Bill
is finally loosening up.

I got the new Rob Zombie CD this last week, and there's this one song
that has Ozzy Osbourne on back-up vocals.
Now, stay with me on this one..
Ozzy at one point sings the word "Exterminate"... and it suddenly came
to me that he sounds EXACTLY like a Dalek. That same nasal tone, that
same elongation of vowels, that same british accent...
Ozzy Osbourne is a Dalek!
This raises important questions, like how does he go up stairs? And
where is he hiding that plunger?

We now return to our regularly scheduled conversation.

Will--you must go out & watch Dr. Who *right now*! Stop standing
around, man! Hop to it!

I would recommend the Tom Baker years, but everyone has their
favorite--it's usually whoever you saw first in the role. Tom was
playing him when Douglas Adams wrote for the show, though.......

And Dan--that was hilarious! It explains the whole
"biting-the-heads-off-small-animals" thing, though, doesn't it? Just
like a Dalek......

Rocky--that's what *everybody's* been telling me. I almost missed my
stop on the train this morning....

Kristina--I meant to tell you this when our Mr. Ford made you miss a
train stop--I had the same experience, only it was on a lunch break
from the teacher certification test. I was so buried in Dragon Waiting
that I almost missed the afternoon session. :-)

You can see a Dalek (the Dr Who villian) here:

http://homepages.bw.edu/~jcurtis/Dalek_Book.jpg

Yes, it's a scanned image of a book by Terry Nation. If I am not
mistaken Douglas Adams was Terry Nation for a few episodes of Dr. Who.

Must make this short, as I'm watching "Donnie Darko" and have to
return it in 3.5 hours..........

First, thanks to Christy for the good wishes re: my girlfriend's job
- she got it! Shockingly, she'll be living in the Hartford area in
less than two weeks. Don't know how we'll be able to handle actually
living within a reasonable distance of each other.

I've spent a lot of time taking photos lately, really enjoying getting
back into it after many years away. Between that and some really cool
software called ZBrush, I'm experiencing a bit of a creative
renaissance these days, and needless to say, that feels great.

Everything's coming up roses :^) Just hope whatever it is that's
making my reluctant (though not completely unwilling) to start won't be
too expensive. It did just turn 200,000 miles over the weekend, so
I'm willing to cut it some slack.

So, best to all, and I'll try not to be such a stranger as soon as
things calm down a bit. The plane engine just hit the house in the
movie, so I need to pay more attention.............
