Tree, how about Love in the Afternoon? One of my favorites, and the
age gap between Gary Cooper (damn Gary Cooper!) and Audrey Hepburn is
really odd, but really perfect.

Will, I love His Girl Friday, but my favorite Cary Grant movie is
Bringing Up Baby, which isn't on DVD, and is far too expensive on VHS.
What is Walker doing in CT??

And personally considering calling out of work, but that's a different
story.
I just read this
"A religious war is like two children fighting over who has the
biggest immaginary friend" from this site
http://www.napkin.org/napkin.cfm?Start=1062
it's rather interesting

Hey Will, if you're in my neck of the woods drop me a call, I've got
weekends off and know all the good comic shops, oddities and the like,
and I give a great casino tour :makes me gag, but I can do it:

I've just finished reading Coraline to my friend's daughter, and her
fater had a related nightmare,....she thought he was a "wossie" her
words and spelling.
I like the book and *really* enjoyed reading it aloud.

Mike - Elegant and heartfelt. I particularly found the passage about
various people's gods' reactions interesting. there is a lot of nuance
here...
this sounds rather cold and analytical... but I wanted to say
something other than "wow"... which is what I usually do when
confronted with something like that.

EMAIL FROM CHRISTY:

Shawn --
> I'm breaking into very unmanly giggles of joy at the idea that someone
else in the world actually wants to have Nowhere Man on DVD.

You mean you were so boggled to find your enthusiasm shared that you
momentarily forgot to look cool? ;) (Neil-blog reference, for the
confused.) But yeah, I've heard of people selling tapes they made from
the TV, but I've never taken the chance. That was a wonderful show,
wasn't it? Bruce Greenwood is amazing.

Rocky -- I'm sure you didn't mind his hair too much in the recent _Star
Wars_ flicks, either. ;) And anything I've heard about the _Highlander_
sequels suggests that "There should have been only one!"

Michelle -- So how long does Big Mud last each year? Have a safe trip!

Glen -- I just saw that binary quote on another messageboard last week, and
loved it. (I'll bet you enjoyed "Cold Colours.")

If I were into wearing T-shirts that nobody understood but me, I probably
would get a goldfish one.

Kristina -- Congrats on the job! And I hope that package means that _my_
order will be processed soon.

Dodge -- I wasn't there, but I'd cut her some slack. Theoretically, I'm
kind of a "people collector," but I also know what it's like to have
everybody grabbing at you until you'd KILL for some time to yourself.
Family alone can overwhelm at times, especially when you're doing all the
giving.

Mike -- Very moving, very real poem.

Cary Grant comedies: _My Favorite Wife_ is hilarious, and of course there's
good old _Arsenic and Old Lace_. I never realized how well Cary Grant did
comedy until I saw that movie.

Tracey -- That "napkin" site reminds me of Jack Handey. And it's addictive.

Christy,
Who can think of worse interpretations of "BM"

Um..Christy? Repeat after me..."STAR WARS ended with THE EMPIRE
STRIKES BACK."

Just like the Indiana Jones ended with RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.
Rumors of additional movies or the creation of various so-called
franchises have been greatly exaggerated. Trust me! ;>

I was the sole goldfish buyer! I love the goldfish.

9 days til I move into my lovely new apartment. Then begins the hard
bit -- finding a job. Tara was very kind to point out neat places in
which to work around the neighborhood a few days ago, so I have some
ideas.

Jinx, which body part don't you need? If it's an arm, I'll gladly take
it!

Rocky slipped, and is correct -- SW did end with the Empire Strikes
Back. Although I have to admit that I liked The Last Crusade.

Maure, I need to be minus one gallblader, and am begining to think
about donating my body to a medical school a.s.a.p.

Dan, I love the kids in my life, no matter how crappy I feel or how
bad a day I've had, any one of the ones I know are wonderful even when
they are being horrid. I think it has a lot to do with no one of them
are mine. :eg:

The napkin site is lovely fun, I've found several new sigs and have
had a blast with the b/f with it.

Rocky, you know I adore you, but I have to say that while it was not
the best movie ever I totally lost it watching Highlander 2 with the
future chicken men guys who were sent to kill whats-his-name.

Orangefae - You're quite welcome. By the way, the link to the website
Neil provided for the Coraline bookwrap interview also features
Kushiel's author, Jacqueline Carey. I thought she was in excellent
company. ;)

Kristina - What was wrong with THE LAST CRUSADE? Don't get me
started. How the hell did they manage to make me loathe Sean Connery in
a movie for chrissakes?! I mean..he's Sean Connery!

Glen - You've been reading the insoc newsgroup! That .sig just made
it's rounds there - Actually, they've been speaking in binary code for
the past month or two now. It's a little disturbing.

Christy - BM lasts a week, but someone's got to go early and stay late
to set up and tear down and clean up everyone else's mess. Actually,
leaving in less that 12 hours, and won't be back for about 2 weeks. And
'Arsenic and Old Lace' is one of the coolest movies ever!

By the way, for those who do not celebrate birthdays, or periodically
forget major holidays and the like, I've declared this day (whichever
one your reading this on) to be Random Unholiday Day. Just for the heck
of it... and because I'm feeling all celebratory for actually getting
my life packed together for the burn with 12 or so hours to spare!

Email from Margret:

Hi all, I know it has been a long time since I have posted any messages
here, mostly because I feel bad that I can't afford my own account.

Any way...Jinx, I just wanted to commiserate with you on the gall bladder
problem. I have been having trouble with mine since last April, and am
finally having it out next Tuesday. It is supposedly a fairly simple
procedure, and only requires one night stay at the hospital, but then you
get to feel like crap for at least a week or two afterward.

I also wanted to thank you for the napkin.org link. There are some very
amusing quotes there. Here's one that I found that seemed oddly on
topic:

"Blood is thicker than water. But the goldfish don't seem to like it as
much."

Just read a Times article about the vandalism by Clinton staff.
Said there was an important phone that was forwarded to ring to "a
phone in a closet". So, WHY is there a phone installed in a closet at
the White House? The conjectures going through MY head are interesting.

Rocky -- You are quite the queen of movie denial, aren't you?

Jinx -- No worries about the hat. I can't even get the picture to come up!

Kristina -- It's been over two weeks, and they still have the sales tax part
of the invoice "Pending." Are we getting into the realm of not-normal here?
If so, I think I will e-mail them.

Mousey -- And a Very Merry Un-Birthday to you!

Glen -- "Cold Colours" is kind of an atmospheric piece in _Smoke & Mirrors_
involving the coexistence of technology and magic. That was the one story
where I didn't know WHAT the heck was going on, but I did appreciate some
very clever turns of phrase in there.

Margret -- Good luck with your surgery! Let us know how it goes when you
feel up to it. And I share your chuckle at the goldfish quote! :)

Well, I see that the _Coraline_ topic is more or less sewn up (allusive pun
intended). That was fun; thanks to all involved.

And one more day of Edinburgh festivities, and our boy comes home. Safe
travels, Neil!

Happy Friday, Christy
