We're looking for a few WELL members to read a new novel (for free) and participate in a discussion with the author in <inkwell.vue> Here is a description: NO DIRECTION HOME A Novel Marisa Silver "Blindness will be like this." So says ten year old Will Burton, trying to re-imagine his life in the wake of his father's abrupt disappearance, as his family picks up the stakes and moves to California. At the same time, another boy, Rogelio Alfaro risks his life to cross the border illegally from Mexico to reach his father, enduring gangs, police roundups, and the pitiless desert. And Marlene McClure, a hard-edged, yearning teenager leaves her own Midwestern home in search of a father she has imagined but never known. The lives of each of these children and their families converge on a single home in Los Angeles-where the very needs and desires that have torn them apart allow them a measure of hope together. Written with heart-stopping grace and a powerful understanding of the passions that define family, No Direction Home masterfully evokes how far we will go in the name of a place to call home. Marisa Silver is the author of a collection of stories, Babe in Paradise. She made her fictional debut in The New Yorker and her work has been anthologized in The Best American Short Stories. She lives in Los Angeles. Send email to inkwell@well.com if you're interested.

Jacques Leslie will be joining us in Inkwell.vue on September 23 for a two- week conversation about his new book, "Deep Water: The Epic Struggle Over Dams, Displaced People, and The Environment." From Jacques's web site, http://www.jacquesleslie.com/ -- "Jacques Leslie's work in progress about dams around the world persuasively argues that water will be to the 21st century what oil was to the 20th: an increasingly scarce but crucial natural resource that is `the prize' on a global battlefield. It's a struggle that involves every possible issue- economic globalization, international politics, the clash of cultures, global warming, agricultural policy and conservation ..." (Quote from the citation by judges Ted Conover, Jonathan Harr, and Sara Mosle for the J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award given to Jacques Leslie's "Deep Water") We have a small number of copies of Jacques's book to offer to WELL members who'll read the book, then join the discussion. We always invite members of the WELL to participate directly in these discussions, and in most cases we offer review copies of the book that we're discussing in exchange for a commitment to join us and be prepared to ask questions of our guest. That way, we have diverse approaches that would be missing if the discussion leader were the only other participant. For example, Ted Orland is coming to visit next month. He'll be in <inkwell.vue.> for two weeks, starting July 26. We have a few copies of his book, The View From The Studio Door: How Artists Find Their Way in an Uncertain World, and we will share them with Well members who would like to participate meaningfully in the conversation then. Interested to absorb the material and join the discussion? Member of the Well? Able to receive mail at at U.S. address? Then we've got a book for you. Drop me a note: <bumbaugh@well.com>

We have an interview coming up with David Shenk, author of "The Immortal Game: A History of Chess". This is a wide-ranging book on the history and influence of chess, not merely on the play of the game. The book's subtitle: How 32 Carved Pieces on a Board Illuminated Our Understanding of War, Art, Science and the Human Brain tells you plenty about this unique work. Those interested in receiving a copy of the book and participating actively in the Inkwell discussion are invited to email the Inkwell hosts at: inkwell@well.com

Another politically interesting Inkwell interview is coming up in December, specifically Dec 13 - Dec 27. We'll be interviewing Heather Wokusch, author of _The Progressive's Handbook: Get the Facts and Make a Difference Now (Volume 2)_. This second volume in the series focusses on the Bush administration's policies on voting, the environment, and foreign policy. The books are available on Amazon. However - we have several review copies available free to those willing to commit to reading the book by Dec 13 and participating in the online discussion during the Dec 13 - Dec 27 timeperiod. Yes - I know it's the Christmas holiday. Yes - we'd like you to show up every day (or nearly so) and take part in the discussion. No - we don't necessarily expect you to abandon your family at Christmas dinner to log onto the Well and talk politics. If you're willing, we have a free copy of the book for you. Email inkwell@well.com if you're interested.

Coming up in Inkwell: A conversation with David Hafter about his new book "Growing Balls: Personal Power for Young Men". From the web site for the book, www.growingballs.com: "Growing Balls: Personal Power for Young Men is a concise self-help book focusing on the serious subject of helping young men to avoid the pitfalls of premature marriage and fatherhood. Directly addressing issues of integrity versus bravado (false balls), sexuality, substance use, intimacy, maturity, falling in love and friendship, Growing Balls is like an owners manual a primer for young men. The authors voice is that of an older mentor (and a psychotherapist) who makes references to conversations with his friends, other men in their 40s and 50s, who wonder, If I only knew then what I know now " If you'd like to get a free copy of the book and participate in the conversation, email inkwell@well.com.
