Inkwell: Authors and Artists

    

A friend has passed along an advance copy of Alan Rich's review of my Los
Angeles concert that should be appearing in the LA Weekly later this week.
I'll wait until it's online and then post a link, but I'm happy to say it's
a real keeper, with a lot of great pull-quote potential.

In addition to reviewing the concert, Alan mused a bit on my work over the
years. Here's his closer:

"One of my favorites among his great works is Shing Kee, one of "Four
Pieces" on Electro-Acoustic;  its material is a tiny phrase from a Schubert
song, which he has sampled and reconstructed from the quiet  throb of the
piano at the start to the full blossoming of the phrase some 15 minutes
later. What I hear in this music is two composers at work some 175 years
apart: Schubert in constructing his eloquent  phrase, Stone in delving
deeply into the source of its eloquence. And what's most amazing is the way
those two guys get along".
  

    

That's a great last line there, in particular. 

I used to be friends with Alan, and he's a great guy, and I wish I still 
saw him around. 
  

    

Alan's no spring chicken, but he still seems to get out there and make the
scene. He actually looks healthier now than when I was living in LA and saw
him regularly, ten years ago.
  

    

Yeah, well, the last time I ran into him, we barely recognized each other, 
because he seemed to have lost all the weight I had put on in the 
interval.
