Thank you for the reminder to my deteriorated brain cells to check
out 4 Way Street again.

I love that song.

4 Way Street is unbelievable, especially with the bonus tracks, including
the mind-melting Neil medley, and one of Nash's very best songs, "King
Midas in Reverse."

One of my favorite songs on the album is "Lee Shore," which contains the
totally beautiful little intro section that <croz> dropped for a long
time, and occasionally brings back. I also LOVE the electric "Lee Shore"
version on the box set -- Stephen at his very very best.

Speaking of Stephen, by the way, I feel bad that quite a few things I've
said here have been negative about his later work. One track of his that
I always thought should be considered an absolute classic is "Go Back
Home" from his first solo album. I have met a lot of Clapton fans who
weren't even aware of that track, which contains my very favorite Clapton
solo. It's searing!

The Buffalo Springfield boxed set was a great way to be reminded of the
greatness of Richie Furay's voice. And his songs were not too shabby. "A
Child's Claim to Fame!"

Word, Diga, word. EC at his very best, and on somebody else's album
yet. And the way it comes out kinda "by surprise" at the end, then
just launches and soars off in flame... wow. I never get tired of
it, even after what must be a thousand listens. I'd love a boxed-
set of "the 1970 Stills/Clapton Sessions"! if only they had ever
happened :-)

Not much has been said here about Stephen's 2nd solo album, but i
like it as much or even more than the 1st. Fuller sound, with the
horns. "Ecology Song" is still right-on appropriate, sadly, more
than ever. And EC's unfortunately-short solo on the great "Fishes
and Scorpians" is also quite tasty, worthy of note.

Hey, how about THOSE two songs by CSNY in concert....?

Singin' Call, from that album, is a perfect gem. I cry nearly every time
I hear it.

The truth is, Stills and Clapton could have played together much more
than they did. There were plans to record an electric version of "Black
Queen," but Stephen's solo acoustic version (dedicated to Jose Cuervo
Gold Label Tequila)halted that idea. Too bad. As "Go Back Home" and
"Fishes & Scorpions" illustrate, the two men's guitar styles play off
of one another so well. In early 1974, when Clapton re-emerged in Miami
and was looking to piece a band together, he has said he wanted to get
together with Stills. At that time, Stephen was finishing up a solo
project and gearing up for a stadium tour with CSNY, so ... unfortunate
timing.

re: way way up there ^

i finally found "on the beach" on vinyl - a <digaman> rec made months
ago and finally realized a few weeks ago with a $6 find.
Woohoo!

The Keys on "See the Sky about to Rain" are mesmerizing.

Re: CPR - I'm certain the $40 ticket price has a lot to do with low
attendance. I'm certain the show is that good, but id imagine its hard
to draw the unitiated at the price level.

Greetings from muggy New Jersey ...

Just returned with my wife from the opening of Henry's Gallery in New
York's SoHo district (114 Spring St., near Mercer). It was great to be
eye-to-eye with my friend Henry Diltz (we talk frequently, but had not
gotten together in many moons), surrounded by his stunning 16 x 20 and
14 x 11 prints, black and white and color, including: CSN '69 at Big
Bear and on "the couch" for their first album cover; Stephen Stills'
first solo album cover -- in the snow, with the purple giraffe, Gold
Hill Colorado, 1970; Crosby with "flag pillow in the shape of a gun,"
1970; Neil Young tuning up his White Falcon guitar before a CSNY show
at Balboa Stadium, San Diego, 1969; Paul and Linda McCartney, 1971, in
outtakes from a Life magazine shoot; Joni Mitchell looking out a window
of her Laurel Canyon cottage, 1969; The Doors at Morrison Hotel in
downtown Los Angeles; plus classic shots of James Taylor, Ringo, Janis
Joplin, Jerry Garcia, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Linda Ronstadt,
Jackson Browne, the Eagles ... it was visual overload, man, in a real
good way.

A guy from Venezuela brought two copies of the CSN "couch album" for
Henry to sign, then he bought a 16 x 20 framed outtake from the "couch
shoot." The guy, named Mercurio, said that he learned English listening
to CSN songs over and over again.

Another guy, a musician from Oregon who now works as a photographer at
the Museum of Natural History, said his local Oregon group opened for
The David Crosby Band in the '80s "a week before Crosby got busted."
The guy, named Eric Edwards, had a pretty fair Croz moustache
happening.

A steady stream of music flowed from a CD player ... CSN, Joni, James,
Doors, Eagles, Linda Ronstadt ... and on a small table was a stack of
the Diltz DVD, "Under the Covers," a great collection of stories and
images about the making of many of Henry's most famous album covers ...
and there were copies of our CSN biography, which Henry and I signed
together.

As I was leaving, I glimpsed Henry surrounded by groups of gentle
souls, obviously enchanted by the magic of his photography ... a great
night. Anyone who lives in the Greater New York area is encouraged to
check out Henry's Gallery (Tues - Sun) in SoHo. You'll be amazed.

Bon soir et a bientot ...

For some strange reason, when I was young, I thought that pillow was a
giant flag-shaped joint. :-)

That exhibit sounds absolutely amazing! Does Henry sell his prints
online?

Steve, I thought the same thing about the flag pillow. But in the
Diltz photo of Croz with the pillow on page 130 of my CSN book, he's
got a rolled one in his other hand. ;-)

The show is a stunner. What I forgot to mention in my post last night
is that all of the prints are signed by Henry. He has a wonderful
calligraphy way of handwriting, with painterly Southwest-style angles,
bends and curves in his lettering. To see what I mean ... Henry penned
the "Thank yous" on the back of the Buffalo Springfield Again album
cover as well as the credits on the Eagles' Desperados album cover,
among others.

Those who can't make it to Henry's Gallery in SoHo (114 Spring St.,
ph: 212-941-8770) should check out his website
http://www.henrysgallery.com/mainframe.html, where, yes, Henry Diltz
prints can be purchased online.

you guys had me ransacking my LPs looking for my MFQ album. No luck so far.
They did a wonderful bit at a Troubadour gig in 67 or 68. Went offstage
in mid set and come back with electric instruments and did a killer, letter
perfect cover of "Help Me Rhonda".
