And he'll be here discussing it in September, too.

A note that I'll be appearing on Wednesday night, August 27, from 8 pm
until 10pm on David Gans's radio show on KPFA 94.1 FM in northern
California (and online at www.kpfa.org and www.kfcf.org).

We'll be discussing my new book "Eight Miles High," the follow-up to
"Turn! Turn! Turn!" I'll be playing plenty of classic and rare
folk-rock from 1966-70 as aural illustration, and going over some
topics we'll hopefully go over in further depth when "Eight Miles High"
will be discussed in inkwell.vue starting September 19.

I'm loving "Eight Miles High". Just loving it. Thanks again, Richie.

I know this discussion took place six years ago, but I just received
an email from someone who just saw it and is eager to clear up
something discussed in post 127:

"Just stumbled across a forum....

Kathy Smith of Stormy Forest nonfame was old friend of mine and is NOT
NOT NOT the one who did in Belushi.

Confusion must come because both are singers."

Wow, you deserve some kind of award for making use of Inkwell to
clarify information years later! Thanks for setting the record
straight, Richie.

Indeed. I'm sorry I was the one who brought up the rumor that she was,
which I'd seen and heard in numerous places over the years. As I stated
in the original go-round, I tended to think it wasn't true, despite the
insistence I'd seen in some quarters that it was, and was hoping to see
the theory debunked.

Richie being as reliable a source as I can imagine on the music of that
era, I happily consider the bunk disposed of.

Don't feel bad, Gary; you just reported this as something you'd seen
referred to without stating it as a definite fact. I just saw this
rumor stated elsewhere, in a music encyclopedia, without any
qualification.

Yikes. I hope the less sleazy Kathy Smith wasn't too hounded by the
rumors. I knew her fleetingly circa 1969/70 (met her when we sat in
adjacent seats at one of shows at which the Stones recorded "Get Yer Ya
Yas Out" at MSG), and she was very nice.

So what became of the Kathy Smith who WAS with Belushi?

According to Wikipedia:

Cathy Smith (yes, with a C, which also made me doubt that it was "our"
Kathy Smith) did 15 months for involuntary manslaughter and possession.
Got out in 1988, was deported to Canada. Arrested in British Columbia
for heroin possession in '91, got $5,000 fine and probation. Other than
an interview in 1998 on the "E! True Hollywood Story" episode on
Belushi, that seems to be the last sighting.

But if you read the rest of that Wiki entry, you'll see some of her
other connections in the music world:

And this is why the Well is the Well and the rest of the internet is
just some place where bytes are spread around. I cannot imagine a
discussion of this somewhere else being updated in such a manner.
