Note: AFAIK, BBEdit is a Mac-only program. There's a free version called BBEdit Lite that can be had at various locations on the web. Plain text = ascii only, like in pico.

BBEdit is great for web pages. The retail version (not the freeware) allows you to open a document via FTP, and save it the same way.

Since this interview, i have become enamored of www.google.com for my first search in any quest. it prioritizes pages which lots of other pages link to... which weights things in a usually useful way... and it has a cache of the page as it appeared at indexing as well as the link to that URL now, so that if you are looking for "flower arrange thistle" and you find a craft-of-the-day-page but it now features model painting, you can see the thistle page from another day which the search spider found, still in that cache link. I have heard of sites which restoed accidentally deleted pages from that cache feature on google! So Reva, how do you rate it?

I started using google after the review of it on Salon by <scottros>. I was particularly attracted by his description of its peer-review-type ranking algorithm. Then just for a lark I went to google and typed in "chocolate chip cookies" and MY OWN PAGE came up first!! I was so excited!

I find myself going to google a lot these days. I think partly because it's so much fun to type, and partly because the site isn't all crapped up with ads and portal-type distractions.

I spent some time yesterday doing some searches on google and found it to have a much higher percentage of useful hits than any other search engine I've used.

Taking your recommendation, I just went to google after a frustrating and fruitless search on Alta Vista, usually my search engine of choice. What I liked was that, in addition to the highlighted link, google also displayed the text I was looking for highlighted and in context so I could actually find it when I went to the link. I may have a new favorite, now that Alta Vista seems to be more interested in being a portal than in being a useful search engine.

I posted a pointer to this topic, and realized that this one should have a pointer to the continuation for the second edition. http://engaged.well.com/engaged/engaged.cgi?c=inkwell.vue&t=77
