Thank you, Sasha, for a lively, thought-provoking, and optimistic discussion
and book. I am especially heartened that you do not perceive the diversity
of the US to be an impossible barrier to a vital, rich commons. I will
remind myself of your hope and continue my small push in that direction.

As for Henning Mankell, there are a couple of stories that really started
me thinking about Swedish anxieties about change. Alas, I left all those
books in Stockholm and don't remember the titles.

Thank you, also, Julie, Angie, and David, for this discussion.

One of the funny things about the mystery genre is that at least the
hard-boiled stuff tends to be inherently subversive. James Ellroy, for
example, claims to be extremely right wing - however, his entire body
of work is about corruption and insanity among our society's authority
figures.

He generally skewers the right-wing loonies.

Right. If he's a right-winger, he's a very odd one. But then, he
seems to be a fairly odd guy.
