Great points, Paulina. I thought Page One was a great documentary (I was lucky to see it in NYC when the producers gave a "talk back" afterwards). I was also struck by how much hope for salvation they were placing on NYT's move to an online "pay wall" model. Although there have been some rosy recent reports on this model, it seems to me that the revenues it generates does not come close to offsetting other losses. Also your point about magazine writing is important to recall - though many of the models that are not hurting as much, as Ed Ward notes, are nonprofit and could not survive if they were not supported by foundations or other private benefactors. I think this model will work well for specific news orgs like the Nation and the National Review (depending on how much they are receiving, etc.). But I don't think it can serve as a systemic fix.

Clarification: In the above post, the "they" in the third sentence refers to NYT journalists (not the directors of Page One).

and many magazines have been money-losers for decades (rumor had it, for examople, that advertising in 'vogue' subsidized 'the new yorker')

I want to thank Victor and Angie, and everyone who contributed, for a very interesting conversation. While the attention of Inkwell moves to a new conversation today, this topic will remain open indefinitely.

It's been super! Thanks, Victor and Angie. By the way, the next conversation sprung from the <byline.> and <writers.> conferences on The WELL, and is about the newest wrinkles in e-book publishing and selling pieces that are in a long-article format. Some readers of this topic may find that one interesting too.
