Free downloads.

I've "loaned" tunes to many dvds and so on. No big deal, just drop me a line
at rocket@well.com

Kind of an interesting point: At this stage I'm really not interested in
the money. I made about three grand DJing last year, which is way better
than I would expect to do from anything music-related.

Actually, I have no idea why I go on doing this. Just for fun, I guess.

I've allowed lots of my msuic to be used in films, etc. No reasonable offer
(even if it's zero) will be refused.

While we formally conclude our two weeks today, this conversation is
always open and I invite folks to continue posting.

David, Rik, Adam, Eric, Scott, and Susan thank you all for a great
time, for all of your personal and professional sharing and your
openness and generosity. I learned a lot,and have all kinds of new
music to check out.

I wish you all the best...play on.

Yeah, that was fun!

One thing we never really got into: SoundCloud.

This is by far the best thing I've seen in the music/Internet space in many
years. It's very easy to upload your work and manage who can see it/listen
to it/download it and it helpfully keeps valuable metrics on your stuff.

The player widget is also extremely easy to embed in another web page if
you want to drive traffic to your home page. The widget is HTML5 and
therefore plays on iPads and iPhones (as opposed to Flash, which most of
these things are made of).

It is almost perfect.

And it's not just for independents. We talked about the Beastie Boys --
they used it on their last album.

What's interesting about that is that I listen for free, and like it
enough to buy the album.

The system works!

I too have found things on SoundCloud I've later bought.

Thanks all!

I've been waiting to try <http://soundcloud.com/> when I have some
time to play around during their free trial period. I notice they
support "groups" as in community/audience groups in some way. Has it
taken hold to where there are groups of WELL folks there, or WELL
<music.> conference folks, or the like?

(Heh, I see that there is a free level. Missed that the first time I
looked at the site. It's the Freemum revenue model after all. So I
guess I can join free and save a trial at a higher level for another
time.)

Right, I don't pay a thing. But eventually I probably will, to take
advantage of the premium stuff (more songs, more sets).

I don't know about groups, but you can "follow" people, which is fun.

How does SoundCloud work, for those ofus who haven't seen much of it? If I
wanted to sell a song or a colelction fo songs there, what do I do?

Good question.

You register, then start uploading tracks.

You can allow people to download them for free, or you can disable
sownloading, or you can even charge for downloads via a spiffy internal
tie to Paypal (IIRC).

You can also arrange your tracks as "sets," which maps well to albums.

Example: http://soundcloud.com/beastieboys/sets

Does it cost money to have an account there?

No, it's free. But you only get three "sets" and so many songs before you
need to upgrade to a paid account.

Here are the tiers:

My 18 year old son has a couple of accounts at SoundCloud (for a
couple of different projects (http://soundcloud.com/dads-on-display;
http://soundcloud.com/jonah-baseball) - when he wrote me to check 'em
out I decided I should have a soundcloud account as well - but when I
went to create it, they said there was already an account with that
name (and not a name I use so much, my usual was taken) - at first I
was incensed... but then guessing a password, it turned out to be me
afterall... years dormant, I probably opened it when they opened ...
