Alrighty!
Let's poke some fun...
examples and mp3 downloads at http://www.southerndiscomfort.com

cd's can be purchased and mailinglists joined there as well.

We already have a song about bush and coke.

The DWI doesn't seem that funny, hmmmmm

I always wanted a song about Click and Clack the Tappet Brothers from Car
Talk but thats why Friedy is the writer. The last song I contributed had
transvestites and Hooters persons in it.

For a Click and Clack song, the refrain would have to be:

"Don't drive like my brother!"

should include Studebaker's, too.

I keep thinking about a dealership called
Click and Clack Dodge/Buick/Isuzu/Porche/Studebaker for some reason.

Say..
If we come up with a pattern, some kind of meter, we can just do
a ton of verses ... the way the epic limeric topics go in
the WELL <words.> conference.

Later an astute editoral eye could pick out the good parts!

Maybe compose words as if to the tune of, and then trust in our song experts
to decid to use that tune of a different one.

I've alwys thougth it ironic to hear advertising jingles on PBS...
Think we could get a bunch of those together and form a limerick, or should
we just stick to Click and Clack for now...

Go anywhere you want, I was just throwing that out there like a bad piston
rod.

As far as the vehicle for the song goes, (help me alan!) We often start with
some line that works for a situation and go from there. Like the song that
Friedman wrote about the Federal Reserve Bank started out with, "we'll have
funds, funds, funds 'til Greenspan takes our T Bills away." And, a Madonna
song we've just had a request to revive for a client began with the Evita
hit lyric:

"Don't lie with me, Dennis Rodman
The Baby's not your problem..."

I don't know, I've heard that you can sing all of Emily Dickinson to the
tune of "The Camptown Races".

Choco, we have a song about telemarketers on our new CD. It's to the
tune of Dylan's Rainy Day Women. The punch line is "everybody must get
phoned." While I write most of the material for our shows, I'm
jealous to say I didn't write that one. We got it from the producer at
a local TV station who contributes to our cause occasionally. Alan
Thornton does a great Dylan in singing it.

that's right, "Yellow Rose of Texas".

"Camptown Races" was Ezra Pound.

Okay Nancy, a tape of Robert Redford called you? what happens if he gets
your voicemail? It gives a whole different spin to that old, 'My Machine
will call Your Machine' thing.

Redford was in "the way we were", right?

You left a message
I heard your voice on my machine.

Such a sexy blueyed message
though it dragged and slurred...

bridge:

but did you even dial my number friend?
sounds like others wrote your lines.

you nagged me like my mother then,
'if I'd vote left, you'd feel fine....'

I'll save my memory
listen to my tape reel whir.

If I don't vote you won't condem me,
no.....

If I don't vote don't condemn me!
your golden tone still purr..........

but that wouldn't really be a good topic because it's too hard to explain.
the setup should really be something that people will understand in the
first verse without having to be told who is speaking or why.

something like that might work better later when more folks have had more
annoyance calls from taped celbrity telemarketers but unless redford was
in the news for being the first one to do this or something the song above
wouldn't really resonate with people.

There is an mp3 of our current telemarketer song to download for free at:

Cool. what about folding the election and marketing together somehow...
phone banking, glossy mailers, tv ads & all.

it's getting late, are there no revelations
why do they wait to unleash those sensations

uh... lalalalala la la

our quest for juicy scandal and dirt shall
end in some old flagwaving infomercial

A tepid
election eve surprise ...election eve surprise

(I have no idea where that came from but it doesn't quite fit emily d's
camptown races!)

I like that, gail.
It kinda has a 'one for my baby and one more for the road' vibe.
maybe a voter sings that while in the booth choosing candidates.

Thats one for my conscience
and one for ads that flowed...

that dollar i gave
when i checkboxed my taxes
made their flags wave

i watched the mud fly
and heard ads that assaulted
my ear and eye

this one here's a lout
incumbent's steeped in scandal
throw the bum out

they sent junk mail, so
I've just ignored the issues
I oughta know

So, that
sss

So, thats one for my consience
and one for ads that flowed...

geez, you guys are doing well.
I love mares eat oats, dave.

And Nancy's diacritical method of spelling might be worth stealing for
getting songs ready for folks to sing.

The way a lyric scans is one of the curious things about putting new lyrics
to old tunes.

If you sing these things after you write them you find that you might have
to accent the wrong syllable or stretch a word over two lines or something
peculiar like that.

I'd love to do something purely on Campaign Finance Reform.

We used to sing on to Red Roses for a Blue Lady:

I need some soft money
for a hard campaign...

Have you considered any songs about the new have and have nots... Those
with computers and those without... I've been trying to come up with a line
to start it off with, but I find the issue rather complicated, even with
informed people understanding the negative impliciatons of going without in
the new information age...
hich brings along another question. Have you found some issues that seem to
beg for parody too complicated for one song. Have you done any suites of
songs to get the parody point accross?

inkwell.vue.93 : Help Southern Discomfort Write a Song

Dave, that's a very good idea for a song, about the technological
haves and have-nots. Finding the right vehicle to use for a parody
would be essential. Even though we kid about being offensive, I would
want to do something that's balanced because I know there are people
out there unable to be technologically up to date because of economics.

We do have one song (not yet recorded) about cell phone haves and have
nots to the Christmas Carol "Do You Hear What I Hear?" It's the
"have-nots" complaining about private cell phone conversations in
public places and cell phhones ringing at inopportune times, like when
the soprano's about to do her big number in an opera. We get pretty
good response to that one.
