The road along the Russian River was a favorite drive. Before it ran into Guerneville, near a bend in that road, late one August morning, Caydance had stopped at the Korbel winery and bought a bottle of champagne to take to lunch with Tiara and Cory, two woman artists, who lived together in a restored cabin on the outskirts of Guerneville.

On a table on their deck were home-baked bread, a wedge of Saint-Andre cheese, a tureen of cold cucumber soup, and a bowl of butter lettuce and fresh tomato salad.
