It was difficult to see the driver with Violet’s shiny bulk blocking her view, but when Violet departed, the car pulled up on Caydance's side of the street revealing her brother Jack at the wheel. The O'Brien West Coast car, she realized. She waited until carrying a bulky bag, Jack returned on foot -- having parked the car God knows where.
"You look happy", he observed. "My compliments to McGuire. This is duty free Japanese beer. Is that a quiche? "
While they were consuming the quiche and drinking St. Helena Sauvignon Blanc from her refrigerator (the beer was a gift for Griff), Caydance did something that Griff had insisted that she do and told her brother the story of the enigmatic book object without a key, her concerns about the potential role of Mackie Alarie, and what had happened with Alarie in the woods.
Monday afternoon, while Violet detained her on the doorstep of the building where Caydance lived, she observed a car circling the building. It was not the 1957 Ford, but it looked familiar.
