Portland's Chinese Garden, September 2008

The Chinese Garden is a gift from Suzhou, Portland's sister city in China. It sits in an unlikely spot in a semi-industrial location surrounded by tall buildings in downtown Portland. The grounds are small -- slightly less than one acre -- but once you step inside there's a rich sense of space and calmness.

In the center of the garden is a beautiful pond. Notice the "waterfall" of purple blossoms cascading to the water below the willow tree.

When the blossom withers, the center of the flower forms a beautiful, cone-shaped seed pod.
