Utah, Spring 2010: Boulder and the Burr Trail

The Burr Trail is a backcountry drive that links Boulder to the southern end of Grand Staircase-Escalante. The road is only partially paved. We drive all the paved part and go another 10 miles on dirt, but lacking 4-wheel drive and high clearance we turn back when the road grows too deeply rutted.

We leave the hotel and head out along the Burr Trail.

The staff at the lodge tells us of a narrow slot canyon in a section of the Burr Trail called Long Canyon. It's readily accessible, even to somebody recovering from a sprained ankle. They are right; it's an easy walk and the experience of being in a slot canyon is thrilling.

The slot canyon we hike is off to the left alongside one of the twisty turns along this roadway through Long Canyon.
