Utah, Spring 2010: Our First Week

Our Kanab cabin, or, as we call it, 'the Kanabin.'

For the first few days we wonder why this cop car is always parked in the same place on the same street in Kanab. We finally got close enough to realize it's a "slow down, you're entering town!" warning. We don't know why the dummy has a Hitler mustache.

Hollywood has used the whole Escalante/Monument Valley area of Utah for backdrops, and these cliffs once looked over a large western-town set that appeared in many classic westerns. The sets were abandoned years ago, but became a tourist attraction until arsonists burned them down. They were rebuilt, and burned down again, so the landscape is currently without human structures.

Our frog leaps for joy at seeing the backdrop used in so many westerns.

This old 'town' is actually a set built by Hollywood and used in some 20 various episodes of 'Gunsmoke' from the 1950s through the mid '70s. It rests on private land and is fenced to keep people at a distance.
