"9 Princes of Amber" is the first of the Amber series. 5 books
narrated by Corwin (who is a tool) followed by 5 books narrated by his
son Merlin (who is an ass). Serious followers of the series and/or the
Diceless RolePlaying Game will always engage you in neepery about
which books are better.

(pout)

I just spent all freakin' day at WonderCon.

I usually just go for a few hours, but this time I was stuck working a
booth, so I was stuck there all day.

Every year, almost the only reason I go is to get original art by
Peter Gross.

This year he opted not to show. Almost no artists I like had art for
sale.

Did I mention I was stuck there all day with no art to drool over?

Good grief, I'm easy to buy. :) (does little happy Stardust dance -
which is very swirly with a bit of squeaking, if you're wondering)

Actually, the con wasn't *that* bad. There was a tranny WonderWoman
there, and the Elvis of storm troopers, and a few of the Endless made
it out this year. A thingie from afn-g whom I had never met before
stopped by to say hi and let me drool over his art collection. And I
got to meet Chase Masterson. Not a total loss, but I may have to send
pout-mail in Mr. Gross's direction if I ever figure out where to send
it. Oh, and the CBLDF booth seemed to be pretty busy, so at least
somebody was making it worth their while to be there.

Oh, in case any of you reading this are in the bay area on Monday, May
10: The official afterparty for my wedding is at Death Guild (goth
club) on said Monday (which is 18+ $5/$3 before 10PM 9:30PM-2AM,

I am bummed.

Cleo the Vasty has gone to meet The Big Koi in the Sky. She would
have been 4 years old this summer. I finally figured out that she was
a veiltail:

http://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/veiltail/veiltail-fi3.htm

The ones at the top look like her, except she was all gold.

Anyway, I doubt I can replace her--I bought her in a pet shop, and she
was mislabeled as a fantail. They look identical until the veiltail's
tail keeps growing, and they get a little cap like an Oranda, at about
1 year old. I don't want to take a chance on winding up with a
fantail.

Reading about Veiltails, I discovered that they only live 4-6 years,
and are not for beginning aquarists, so I guess I must have been doing
something right.

I just wish I had given her some peas last week. She ate too much
Friday morning (my Black Moors,

http://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/moor/moor.htm

Aaron, oops, no, that's Erin now, and The Fish With No Name <though I
suppose it will be a boys name *now*> are spawning, and I moved
Wandsworth and Slim <also both apparently male> out of their tank and
into the tank with Cleo and Tiger, my huge, male red and gold Oranda.
I fed kind of heavily since there were 4 good-sized fish in the tank,
and of course Piglet-fish ate more than her share, apparently.) When I
came home late Friday night, she and Tiger were both floating on the
top of the water. I did a water change, and put some aquarium salt in
the tank. They both seemed to feel a little better. Before I crashed
(at 1:00 a.m., dammit) I gave them an antibiotic. I couldn't get
either of them to eat any peas (the ex-lax of the carp world). When I
got up Saturday morning, she was dead, and Tiger was much better. He's
fine now. I guess because she was so old, she just wasn't able to
recover as easily as he did. Dammit.

So yesterday, I was in the fancy new Pet Supplies Plus that has all
the cool goldfish, and there were these Orandas

http://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/oranda/oranda.htm

......one is black & gold like Tiger was when I got him, and one is a
beautiful solid gold, almost exactly like the one in the picture, and
they're both old enough to breed, I think. I just hope at least one of
them's a girl.

The fish in my tank at school look like this:

http://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/oranda/redcap_oranda.htm

And now I will stop nattering on about goldfish.

Now I want Veiltails. When did I turn into a fish nut?

starting Ender's Shadow today)

and we haven't linked it in a while, now would probably be a good time

Kathy again:

Strangely, I just got off the phone with Singer. His DSL went down yesterday
morning. If you've sent him e-mail and he hasn't responded, he's not dead.
Singer, btw, got one of my pen repair *failures*. I broke the tipping off a
nib when I tested it for flex, so I gave the pen to Singer, since he grinds
his own (on old ceramic ICs, IIRC). He's a southpaw and enjoys a good
reverse italic. He also loves Parker 51s. This is the magic of Jon Singer,
he can ride pillion on any hobby horse you care to mount.

Oh -- and does anyone know if a graphic-novel version of _9 Princes of
Amber_ was ever actually published? Says Ben, "It looks like what I
have is a painted comic book adaptation - but I can't find any evidence
of it ever being published." All he can find in his usual sources is
the text novel version, so he's not sure if he's got a nonpublished
work or what.

I'm not sure if a graphic novel version came out, but there was definately a
comic version that came out while I was living in NY. I have all the ones
they published at home, I'll check when it was. '98? I think they did three
issues for Nine Princes, and then Guns, and then they stopped. Grr.

I have a feeling that someone good like Terry Bisson did the
adaptation, although I found the whole thing a bit stultified. I think
a fair amount of Zelazny crept into Sandman -- mostly via Lord of Light
and Creatures of Light and Darkness, but there's some Amber in the
mix.

My memory seems to be correct- I have comics labelled 1-3 of 3 for each of
Nine Princes In Amber and The Guns of Avalon. At that point they just
stopped coming out. I remember being annoyed because each issue ws like $7
and they really weren't quite worth that.
Terry Bisson's name is on them, I think.

along.

(Neil -- Did your account timeout problem ever get solved, or do you

double-thanks for the comments.)

Michelle -- Only four more days! Are you sure you don't want to be
Mrs. Montrose-Hyman-Larson? ;) I hope everything is working out
smoothly.

Neil -- Congrats on _Wolves_'s winning yet another award. And I may
not be giving that or _Coraline_ as a Mother's Day gift, but I *am*
giving my mom that hardback _2 Goldfish_ I found on alibris a while
back.

She was just saying last night how she can't wait until her exams are
done so she can finally start _American Gods_; I think this should tide
her over nicely. :)
