Childrens' books rule. The boy reads them to me any time we go on a
trip together (I usually read him something Neil-related - currently
we're 3/4 through Good Omens). Tove Jansson's Moomin books are some of
my favourites. They're written for younger children, but I've
discovered, reading them as an adult, that some of the general themes
in the books are kind of a lot for your average little kid to want to
take in. Oz books are creepy, but not a bad way to go.

Any way, I'm rambling because I'm really sleepy. Real reason I'm
posting is because wedding photos are up on the photographer's site.

An update on the reading program.

Emmy voluntarily told her mom she LOVES Coraline. Not only that, her
mom watched with amazement as Emmy brought the book into the TV room
and sat on the couch with everyone watching TV - and proceeded to
ignore the screen as she continued reading Coraline - glued to the
book. 

I always love it when I can convert another person to reading.
Especially a child. And, of course, even better when they want to read
my fave authors.

To add to that, one of my bosses daughters is getting old enough to
read to herself as well and he says she started the Harry Potter books.
After P. raved so about Coraline, he wants to borrow that and let his
daughter read that one also.  Since he also reads all books for his
daughters before he lets them read them, ...

So. My copy of Coraline will be passed around a bit for a while. Think
I'll look into acquiring a paperback copy of it.

Will give Emmy Pratchett's children's books next. For a girl, the Wee
Free Men and Hat Full of Sky would be good. Later maybe the Johnny
stories and the Bromeliad but somewhere in there, the horse books also.



And I guess I need a copy of the paperback of Goldfish and Wolves as
well. I can't lend out my copy of Wolves because it's signed. But I
need a second copy anyway.

(I loved the _Five Little Peppers_, too!  And at least the first
couple of _Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle_ books.  The latter ones got boring.)

I saw that this weekend. I think they made a mistake leaving out
everything entirely to do with the trip to the Quiditch match. After
all, it's where we find out stuff we will need later in the series. 

And I may be in the minority but I liked the other two movies better.
This one had it's points but it was a bit frantic.

Wolves in the Well or something?

Will--I liked it, too, but why didn't they tell who Padfoot, Mooney,
Prongs & Wormtail were?  It seemed odd.  You never find out why Lupin
can read the map.  They never even tell you who all the
animag....animaguses?  animagi?  are.  So you don't get the connection
of Harry's Patronus.

I think if I could marry any fictional character, it would be Sirius. 
I'd marry the Marquis de Carrabas, but the adorable scamp would
indubitably trade me to someone horrible for a favor.  He'd find it
regrettable, but he'd sell me anyway. 

Utterly charming, utterly amoral.  My taste in men *sucks*  ;-)

Neil--Congratulations, once again!  And that picture of you on Steve's
website isn't scary.  It's just a baby picture  ;-)

ScaryTrousers used to be online somewhere.  I may have a link on my
computer at home, I'll look.  Did you try Google?

Mary- that was the only flaw I had with the movie, actually, the lack
of that backstory (I'm guessing it was there, but cut for time).  It's
a sad omission, yes, but perhaps necessary; I can't think of any other
scene I'd be okay doing without (this one clocks in at fifteen minutes
shorter than the first one; those fifteen minutes could've quite
possibly been the Mooney backstory).
I knew the backstory, though.  I knew about those characters.  So I
didn't miss the backstory.
My sister hadn't ever read the book, but she didn't miss the
backstory, either.  She loved it almost as much, if not more, than I
did.  I'll have to ask her about it specifically.
Really, I don't think it was completely necessary.  Sure, it's
interesting to know about the animagi, and the history Black,
Pettigrew, Potter, and Lupin had, but I don't think anything suffered
for lack of it (although I've heard someone say he thought Lupin was a
child molester.  I'd blame that on the lack of the background, but I
mentioned it to my sister, and she didn't think that, even a little
bit).

Did it matter for the Patronus?  I knew the background and smiled, but
my sister didn't and she smiled anyway.
I think reading the book and knowing the backstory makes it a more
layered experience, but I don't think it's necessary.  We'll see how
strongly all those elements figure into the final two installments, but
I'm thinking not a whole lot.
  

    
Egads, Neil, you were just a little'un... odd aside that is actually
kind of related - Knowing that they had a stash of Sandman #8 only a
year earlier (it was 1998 at the time), I went back to go get one and
they had finally gotten rid of their variant #8s a few months before I
got there - DISCOUNTED. I had to pay a ridiculous amount for the one I
finally found in decent shape at a WonderCon. grrr. But that's okay
because I got the rest of my missing Sandmans quite reasonably from a
very nice man who needed to make space for a nursery.

Still undecided about whether or not I want to see Harry Potter. I'm
definitely curious, but I was so disappointed by the last one that I'm
wary. I'm guessing it will be one of those 'rent on DVDs' movies for
me.

Wolves in the Well is good. :)

And in completely unrelated news... the boy brought home a kitten on
Friday. She's the smallest kitten I've seen in nearly forever (only 6
weeks old), and she's still standing up to the gigantic Thing e (sort
of).

Neil--I've probably said it before, but there is a painting in your
attic that looks like hell.

Mein Gott in Himmel, you look like a teenager in that picture.  I
think it's lovely that you have genes that allow you to look 10-15
years younger than your current age, even if it does mean that I have
more grey hair than you <<ungrits teeth, relaxes, attempts to let go of
extreme jealousy>>.  I suppose healthy living helps.  You're like a
walking commercial for the benefits of eating raw, dead, fish 3 meals a
day.  ;-)

Mrs. Mousey--Yay!  Kitty!  What color?  It's hard for me to think of
Thing E as gigantic--I remember baby pictures of him not so very long
ago.

I shall go back and look for tinymonster's brilliant idea, and report
back.  Does anybody else have any topic name suggestions?

It *was* Wolves in the Well, in post #1906, as a matter of fact.  I'm
so proud that my memory serves me so well, since it was *a whole 5
posts before my post*.  <<sigh>>  Old, I'm getting.

And I meant to say "Hi!" and "Wellcome!" to slf, but seem to have
forgotten to do that.....where was I?  Ah, yes.  My memory.  Works
marvelously well, don't you think?  It's a wonder I leave the house
with shoes on, at this point.
