Today I caught my youngest (she's 9) trying to read American Gods.
They are pretty much allowed to read anything they want (with the rare
exception of my comics and GNs with adult content), but I found her
choice a bit on the odd side. It's a thick book and, as much of a
reader as she is, it's pretty hard for somebody her age to understand.

So I asked her what she was doing.
"Book report due on Monday."
"But Kat, isn't this one a bit on the hard side?"
"Mamma, is it my fault if I already did all the other books?" With
that she meant Coraline (which she finally had the courage to read
after hearing the CD), Wolves and Goldfish.

I showed her the post where Mr. Gaiman talks about writing Graveyard.
She says she will wait. I have to confess it will be the two of us who
will be waiting. I have been wanting to read it since I heard Mr.
Gaiman talking about it in FG.

Georgia -- some (certainly not all) 9 year olds cope fine with
STARDUST and NEVERWHERE, and may be just fine with ANANSI BOYS. I don't
think any would really get much out of AMERICAN GODS though. (Then
again, when I was 9 my favourite book was Michael Moorcock's
STORMBRINGER.)

And thanks so much for doing the Portuguese blog translation.

I have a friend who wants to track down her family in Brazil -- her
father left Brazil before she was born and won't tell her anything much
about the family. She has a few names and a city... are there any good
Brazilian track down your family sites?

On the last post -- particularly the illustrated STARDUST. And the
original BOOKS OF MAGIC comic I did should be fine for kids.

I dunno, _Books of Magic_ creeped ME out. Maybe not as much of it
would have at 9, though. At least some of it still would have, but
then I know what my own hobgoblins were at that age.

I will resoundingly second the recommendation of the illustrated
_Stardust_! (I think it's safe to say it will be at least thirded, and
possibly fourthed.)

(And now that I think of it, I'll betcha I would have liked
_Neverwhere_ then, too.)

Mr. Gaiman - Thank you for the book recommendations. I ordered
Stardust for her and she's all thrilled about the fact you took the
time (We read the original BoM a while ago, but now she wants to read
all of them). You made Kat quite happy (and the girl who has been
saying she wants to be a doctor since she could talk now has decided
she will be a writer when she's not doing "brain surgery").

The blog translation is a pleasure. People have it bookmarked and
everything.

About the family search sites -- Some things can be looked up, but we
don't have the sort of online white pages that you have available in
the USA. There are genealogy sites, but depending on the family name
and how big the city is, it could be quite hard, but not impossible. I
sent an e-mail to my cousin who had been doing the tracking down of the
new generation part of our tree and am waiting to hear from him. I'll
FAQ it to you as soon as I have a link and hope it will help.

Guess What! I'm buying a townhouse! Mine. Mine very own. Getting out
of apartment rental. Very scary though. I'm hoping by September I'll
still have enough money to drive to Austin and see Neil.

Drive-by post to say

CONGRATS to Dan & his wife

and chime in that STARDUST should be a fun read.

And now off to bed...
