I was thinking about that - so much of it would take place in the players'
heads while they're jamming. It would have to be a lot flashbacks.

You said you learned a lot from Lindsey Buckingham. If you can put it
into words, I'd really like to hear what you learned. (or maybe I
already hear it in your music). Do you play those guitars with your
bare hands or with a pick? I hope you bring them back east.

I tour wth my Renaissance RS-6. I play with a flatpick or with a plastic
thumbpick and metal fngerpicks; I occasionally (if the venue is quiet enough
and my mutant index finger-nail isn't shredded) play bare-fingered.

What I learned from Lindsey had to do with studio techniques that I haven't
been in a position to implement for quite some time. I interviewed him
after "Law and Order" came out, and the told me how made various sounds on
that album. Nothhing earth-shaking, just some tips.

To me, 'Echolalia' sounds Lindseyesque. There's a short solo
instrumental piece he did for an unreleased Buckingham/Nicks LP that
reminds me of it:

I don't hear it. That's an entirely different style of fingerpicking, to my
ear. "Echolalia" owes much more to Jorma (and his forebears) than to
Lindsey.

Is that song different from the song called Stephanie that does appear
on the Buckingham Nick album?

Same song, same album. The LP was an actual limited release; the cd
was never officially released. I guess that's why I think of it as a
bootleg.

I surely hear the Jorma in Echolalia. When I first heard it, I thought
of Embryonic Journey and the opening instrumental of Third Week In
Chelsea. But I heard a quality in Stephanie that reminded me of
Echolalia too. Stephanie is more Spanish, flamenco. Can't explain it
better, sorry.

I have it on both album and cassette, and then my husband at the time
burned me a copy to CD.

The album version is important because of nippleage.

Hello, friends!

The July 4 weekend at Nelson Ledges was a blast! Hot Tuna, NRPS, Peter Rowan
and Tony Rice, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Dark Star Orchestra - all
terrific! I sat in with Keller Williams and with Kettle Joe's Psychedelic
Swamp Review, a terrific new band with Donna Jean Godchaux, the Zen
Tricksters, Mookie Siegel and Wendy Lanter. And in my solo sets, I was
joined by John Kadlecik of DSO (he played 5-string electric violin for one
whole set, and acoustic guitar for half of another) - always a pleasure.

I've posted some photos from the Ledges at http://www.flickr.com/photos/dgans
- and also on that page, you'll find some newly-rediscovered black and white
images from my photojournalism days. I've got black and white shots of
George Carlin, Steve Goodman, Dolly Parton, Martin Mull - and more to come.
massive thanks to John Rottet for scanning the negatives.

I've also posted some new old music at http://www.dgans.com/tunes.html -
including two excellent performances of the Broken Angels with special guest
Phil Lesh, recorded on 11/6/97 ("Sultans of Swing") and 12/27/97 ("Bird
Song," which also features Chuck Garvey of moe. on guitar). You might also
enjoy the new works that are posted at http://www.dgans.com/private-
tunes.html - tracks from the album in progress, titled "Cloud Surfing," that
I hope to have ready by Fall.

I recently completed an online interview that went into some pretty serious
depth about composing, performing, touring, and other stuff. You can read it
at http://www.well.com/inkwell/gans

More gig announcements to come, and soon!

Regarding August 5 and 25: Honky Tonk Hippies is a continuation of my
musical adventures of the last thirty years. In the '70s my favorite bands
were Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen, asleep at the Wheel, and the
Grateful Dead. I was also into Gram Parsons, Bakersfield country, Willie
Nelson, and Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. I played that style of music
in a band called Dusty Roses back then, and I've always wanted to come back
to that style. I've played with David Phillips a number of times over the
years, and I've always wanted to put a band together with David and those
songs. So Honky Tonk Hippies is a new adventure that scratches a long-
standing musical itch. Our songbook will include "Willin'," "Return of the
Grievous Angel," "Bubbles in My Beer," "Pancho and Lefty," "The Lonesome
Fugitive," "Sultans of Swing," maybe a Beatle song or two, and of course a
number of my own compositions that fit the style.

Honky Tonk Hippies:
DG - guitar and vocals
David Phillips - pedal steel, guitar and vocals
Josh Kaye - keyboards
Joshua Zucker - bass and vocals
Jimmy sanchez - drums

One final note: Please pass this information along to your music-lovin'
friends. If you can't make it to any of these shows, please tell your
friends about them and encourage them to attend. Word of mouth is EVERYTHING
in this weird little business of music. Invited them to check out samples of
my various sounds at http://www.dgans.com/tunes.html and check out the tour
schedule at http://www.dgans.com/gigs.html

Thank you for your kind attention, and I hope to see you soon.

I am not complaining about the poster in the toilet. It's one of the weird
things about being a public figure. Oe actually wants to see one's image in
all sorts of places.

I didn't see my poster in the can at tonight's gig, but after my set,
audience members took down the posters and brought them to me for autographs.
So you see.
