Greetings and salutations of the summer!

I'm writing to remind everyone that the Honky Tonk Hippies make their
debut tomorrow night (Saturday 8/5) at the Larkspur Cafe Theater in
beautiful Marin County, California.

You will also find information on my east coast tour, which begins
next Wednesday 8/9 in New York City and includes the Gathering of the
Vibes and two shows with a terrific new band called Kettle Joe's
Psychedelic Swamp Review.

You can find lots more info on these events, and links to the venues
and artists, at http://www.dgans.com/gigs.html

Honky Tonk Hippies is a continuation of my musical adventures of the
last 30+ years. In the '70s my favorite bands were Commander Cody
and his Lost Planet Airmen, Asleep at the Wheel, and the Grateful
Dead. I was also into Gram Parsons, Bakersfield country, Willie
Nelson, and Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. I played that style of
music in a band called Dusty Roses back then, so I'd say Honky Tonk
Hippies is a new adventure that scratches a long-standing musical
itch. Our songbook will include "Willin'," "Return of the Grievous
Angel," "Pancho and Lefty," "The Lonesome Fugitive," "Sultans of
Swing," maybe a Beatle song or two, and of course a number of my own
compositions that fit the style. I hope you northern Californians
will come out tomorrow night to hear this new/old sound - a good
turnout will ensure a return engagement.

  Honky Tonk Hippies:
David Gans - guitar and vocals
David Phillips - pedal steel, guitar and vocals
  Josh Kaye - keyboards
Joshua Zucker - bass and vocals
  Mike Shaw - drums

The Larkspur gig will also feature Eric Rawlins, with whom I recorded
Home By Morning (released in 1997). Eric and I will sing a couple of
our favorite Nanci Griffith songs.

The band I played with on May 13 was almost exactly the same as this
band, so you can consider this a sample of the Honky Tonk Hippies
sound: http://www.dgans.com/audio/shove_hth060513.mp3

I just spent five days in northwestern New Jersey playing music with my
friends form Railroad Earth. Tim Carbone, Andy Goessling, John Skehan III and
ohnny Grubb perfom as the Shockenaw Mountain Boys when they're not doing RRE
work. I played a radio show and a party with John Skehan (fantastic mandolin
player!), and then a gig at the Fountain House with the Shockenaw Mtn Boys.
On Sunday, it was Tim and Andy and John and me, plus Todd Sheaffer (RRE's
brilliant songwriter/singer/guitarist), and our friends Larry Keel and
Natural Bridge. And as a bnus, I joined the Shockenaw Mountain Boys one more
time, Monday evening at the public library in Randolph, New Jersey.

They are all such fine players, and it was a pleasure to spend time onstage
and off with all of them and with the warm, welcoming Railroad Earth family.
If it weren't for the fact that the next phase of my tour brings me together
with Kettle Joe's Psychedelic Swamp Review, I would have had a hard time
saying goodbye to the Railroad folks.

Here's some music from our collaborations:

"King of the Road" with the Shockenaw Mountain Boys 8/12:

Hello again!

It's a beautiful autumn day here in the Bay Area, and I'm just finishing up
all my radio work before jumping into some musical adventures.

This Sunday, September 17, I'll be part of a really fine "all-star" band
headlining a benefit for Rock the Earth at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in
San Francisco's McLaren Park. Chris and Lorin Rowan and I have payed before
as Rubber Souldiers, and we're delighted to be joined this time around by
Barry Sless (pedal steel guitar), Robin Sylvester (bass), Adam Perry (drums),
and special guests including David Nelson, Mark Karan, Marin Fierro, and
maybe ??. Also appearing will be Mark Karan's Buds (Pete Sears, keyboards;
Robin Sylvester, bass; Jimmy Sanchez and Jay Lane, drums). This event is
FREE, although you will be asked to make a donation to Rock the Earth
("Defending the planet one beat at a time") some time during the day. The fun
begins at noon and runs til 6:30 in the evening - this Sunday, September 17.

I am also thrilled to be participating in Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, a free
two-day music festival in Golden Gate Park October 7-8. I'll be performing
on Sunday afternoon with David Phillips on Dobro, lap steel, and vocals, and
Josh Zucker on bass and vocals.

Monday morning I take off for Nashville! I'll be at Windows on the Cumberland
Tuesday evening with my good friend Brian Ashley Jones. Friday through
Sunday, September 22-24, I'll be at Terrapin Hill festival in Harrodsburg,
Kentucky. Then it's home to work on a recording project before I head back
to the southeast in mid-October for a two-week tour that includes the
wonderful MagnoliaFest in Live Oak, Florida.

The details are below, and also at http://www.dgans.com

I didn't get to play at Terrapin Hills last night.

After Cornmeal finished their excellent, high-energy set, I took the stage
and started setting up my stuff as Donna the Buffalo's crew moved their gear
 into place behind me.

We got as far as the soundcheck before the lightning became frequent enough
to portend the arrival of a nasty storm cell. The tarps went up and the
musicians repaired to the hospitality tent.

And then the storm hit. Hoo-wee. It was stunning to watch - big bolts of
lightning slashing horizontally between cloud masses, cracks of thunder in
wide-screen stereo all around - until the force of the rain pinned us down
 in the tents.

Jordy Risk, Donna the Buffalo's roadie and merch guy, saved my gear. As the
storm grew in power, the tarps didn't hold, so Jordy got my guitar into its
case and covered my equipment first with his shirt, then with a towel, and
 then with a sleeping bag.

There was a moment when we thought the wind might lift that hospitality tent
right up out of there. A bottle of very smooth, high-end Kentucky Bourbon
 kept our nerves settled, sorta.

About 90 minutes after the delay began, we were told that the show was offi-
cially cancelled and we'd better get out of there before the roads washed
out and stranded the bus and cars. Jordy went onstage with me and helped me
get my pedals and other gear out of harm's way; we dried each cable and
stomp box as I put them into the suitcase. Jordy is my hero today!

The Weather Channel reports nasty weather all through the midwest and east,
with dozens of tornados touching down and floods everywhere. This area (an
hour or so southwest of Lexington KY) is on high alert. It's not raining
right now, and in fact I just saw some sunlight hitting my guitar strings
through my hotel room window, but the clouds are thick and menacing and TWC
reports a 90% chance of rain with an estimate of half an inch for the day.

I'm due to play in the Pavilion at 1:30. We shall see.

Greetings, good friends!

You may have heard that last weekend's Terrapin Hill Harvest Festival was
washed out by the storm that rolled over your faire state last Friday and
Saturday.

Here is a newspaper story about it:

http://www.amnews.com/public_html/?module=displaystory&story_id=25258&form
at=
html

I was just second away from starting my set on Friday night when the weather
began to turn ugly. It soon became clear that we wouldn't be able to con-
tinue that night. They sent Donna the Buffalo and me back to our hotel after
midnight, before the roads became impassable; by morning it was clear that we
couldn't go on at all.

There is going to be a benefit concert on October 15. I'll be performing,
along with others TBA, and there will be other fund-raising activities to
assist Pete and Brenda Cashel and their team in recovering from this devasta-
tion.

I'm writing to ask all of you to help get the word out about the benefit, and
to attend if possible, and to support the effort in any way you can.

The following is an email I received from Myron Koch of the production team.
More info to follow shortly.

> You may have seen it on CNN or in your local paper, on a slew of local and
> national news shows, or even in the Associated Press newswire... the Ter-
> rapin Hill Harvest Festival got flooded by the Chaplin river this weekend.
> Lots of folks lost lots of stuff, hundreds were evacuated via boat by the
> Red Cross, the fire dept, and other safety officials...and there was im-
> mense damage done to the Cashel's farm. It was pretty devastating. No
> injuries at all, thank God... but lots of damaged property.

> Soooooooooooo, we're doing a benefit to help offset the damages. We need
> your help.

> We at the Peak Summit office have booked the BBC on Shelbyville Rd for Sun-
> day, Oct 15th (three weeks away). LP Productions is donating production
> (and they're the best in town, so production will be great).

> We plan on having a silent auction and a bunch of great live music. All
> proceeds will go toward the relief effort.

> FROM YOU: we could use some help. We want people to play and things to
> auction off. If you can help, please let me know immediately. I'd like to
> have everything in place by mid-week, so we can get the press on it. We'll
> auction off merchandise of all types, so just let me know what you have,
> and I'll tell you where to send it. Bands, solos, duos...etc...the
> (suggested) length of your sets will depend on how many acts confirm. If
> you need a special time slot because of time restraints, please let me
> know. We'll probably start around 2 or 3 and go 'till late.

> We are very fortunate to have events that are as positive to our community
> as those on Terrapin Hill Farm. We would like to see them continue, and
> this is one way to insure that it does.

> Again, please get back to me as quickly as you can. We chose to have it on
> Sunday in order to avoid competition with any weekend activity...hopefully
> you'll ALL be available to help out.

> Thanks very, very much for your support. We need it.

> Cheers, Myron Koch

Hello, friends from coast to coast! I'm heading for the southeast in a few
hours!

In addition to MagnoliaFest, one of the highlights of my performing year, I
will be visiting several familiar places and quite a few cities where I have
never performed before. The basic information is posted below, and the
details are always up to date at http://www.dgans.com/gigs.html

Last Sunday I performed at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, a free festival in
Golden Gate Park. It was a thrill to be included in this event, which
featured Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, Richard Thompson, The Waybacks with
Bob Weir (Gillian Welch and David Rawlings joined the fun, too), T Bone
Burnett, Steve Earle, Del McCoury, and countless other heroes. I performed
as the David Gans trio, with David Phillips on lap steel and Dobro, and Josh
Zucker on bass and vocals. Our set was brief but we had a fine time and were
very well-received. Hear the whole thing here:
http://www.dgans.com/audio/DGtrio_061008.mp3  ;

Now, to the gigs. I hope to see some of you along the way, and if you can't
make it I hope you'll urge your friends and acquaintances to attend!

Reporting in from the road. I've had a great tour, in terms of both musical
satisfaction and career development.

This past weekend was MagnoliaFest, my favorite gig of every year.

Friday morning: opened the mainstage w/ an hour-long solo set, well-attended
and well-received. Broke in a new song, "If Only I Existed."

Friday afternoon: looping workshop w/ Arvid Smith. Huge audience response,
great feedback later.

Saturday night: Closed the Music Hall w/ an 80-minute set backed by all five
Waybacks (for which we REHEARSED, even!), Joe Craven, and Bryn Davies on two
songs. Several people later told me it was the highlight of their weekend.

Sunday morning: rehearsed vocals w/ Peter Rowan and Bryn Davies, then per-
formed "Catfish John" in front of a full house on the Amphitheater Stage
during the Bluegrass Jam, with Tony Rice standing right next to me and play-
ing lead guitar. Also onstage were Warren Hood of the Waybacks, Alan Dalton
on banjo, Sharon Gilchrist on mandolin, and Carroll Clements (Vassar's cousin
and lifelong musical partner) on guitar.

Sunday evening: sat in w/ Donna the Buffalo on "Positive Friction," with a
long, DEEP jam in the middle.

All facets of my musical talents and skills were displayed over the weekend,
and the feedback - from audience and musicians alike - was entirely positive.
Best of all, people were talking about my SONGS.

-

This tour started at Eddie's Attic in Decatur, Georgia, on a bill with
Caroline Aiken and Ralph Roddenbery. I had pedal steel ace Mark van Allen
with me, and Mark and I joined Ralph for some of his set. The day before
that gig, I went up to Caroline's house and rehearsed with her and Satoshi
Euda, who she met in Amsterdam and who came over to play a couple of weeks of
gigs with her. The three of us worked up two of Caroline's songs, "Dry
Spell" and "Between Hello and Goodbye." Satoshi and I also did some jamming,
with me using my loop station. Here's a photo of Satoshi with his gekkin
(aka "moon guitar" or "moon zither"), a three-stringed instrument he used in
our jam at Eddie's.

The next night, October 14, I improvised with the wonderful Joe Craven at the
Melting Point in Athens, Georgia. I've got video of that, as well as audio
of course, and I'll get it posted as soon as I have some time.

Tonight I open for the New Riders here in Atlanta; then it's two mmore solo
shows and home. I've got a house concert in Forestville CA with Jim Page,
and the Honky Tonk Hippies ride again on November 16 in Santa Rosa.
