Had another great session with Jim LeBrecht on the "Cloud Surfing" project.
We edited "Afterbird," an improvisation I did with John Skehan at a house
party on 8/11/06. Jim loved it.

Here's a taste of the piece, with visuals I took with my Canon 800 at the

Saw your name on a festival in Connecticut next weekend. What's it
like, and is it accessible to folks without a Deadhead background?

Heh. It's not for Deadheads only! That would be Gathering of the Vibes, in
Bridgeport 7/31-8/3. I'll be there Saturday evening on the Solar Stage, and
possibly also on Sunday.

Yeah, the Gathering of the Vibes its roots in Deadheadism, and always
features a fair amount of GD-related music, but it has evolved into a
much broader event with an impressively diverse lineup of talent. It's
also of a reasonable scale (IOW, not one of those half-a-million-
hippies-in-the-mud nightmares), and is one of the better-run, most
audience-friendly festivals around. Plus, Seaside Park in Bridgeport
(bequeathed to the city by its most famous resident, P.T. Barnum), is
just a wonderful setting.

Hey, David, I caught your set at the Gathering of the Vibes a month or
so ago. It was as enjoyable as I expected, and I was glad to hear my
old favorite "Down to Eugene."

I wanted to mention that about halfway in, a younger audience member
came up to me and asked "Who is this guy? He's really good" so I told
him (and agreed with his opinion). Thought you'd like to hear it.

I love the farmers' market gigs, but I usually book them a week apart

Kentucky festival offer came in, so I rearranged my Bay Area dates, and

 Thursday, November 20
ASHKENAZ, 1317 San Pablo Avenue, Berkeley

 Beatles Jam Band/Americana/Roots
THE RUBBER SOULDIERS REVUE WITH CHRIS & LORIN ROWAN AND DAVID GANS

 Doors at 8:30 p.m.; Show at 9:00 p.m. $10

Making their Ashkenaz debut, the Rubber Souldiers headline a night of
folk, rock, and a bit of jamming. After the Rowan Brothers (Chris and
Lorin) and David Gans open with separate sets, they come together as
the Souldiers, harmonizing and expanding on classic Beatles songs. As
Gans explains, Rubber Souldiers is a Beatles jam band. The Beatles made
all these great songs with kick-ass grooves, and then they quit em
after three minutes! So in the grand San Francisco tradition, were
stretching them out and stringing them together. And of course, with
the Rowan Brothers at the microphone, you know the vocals are going to
be top-notch as well.

With Gans and the Rowans on guitars, the Souldiers are rounded out by
bassist Paul Knight and drummer CC Dawson. The group was born a few
years ago at Berkeley's KPFA-FM, where Gans hosts the Dead to the World
show, and the Rowans were performing on air. All three began
harmonizing on Beatles songs during the soundcheck, and after the show
they continued to sing for the fun of it. The Rubber Souldiers have
since performed everywhere from San Franciscos Jerry Garcia
Amphitheater to Floridas MagnoliaFest.

The original Rowan Brothers date back to the early 70s as Chris and
Lorin put their close brother harmonizing to work on both old and new
folk and rock songs. They were later joined by their older brother,
bluegrass star Peter Rowan. All three have led separate musical lives,
but Chris and Lorin tour regularly, and in 2004 issued a two-CD set,
Now and Then, that contained one disc of new recordings and a second of
older material. Their sound is a potent mixture of bluegrass-flavored
folk and Everlys/Louvins/Stanleysinspired rockabilly.
<http://www.rowanbrothers.com>

David Gans, singer-songwriter-guitarist-radio
producer/host-author-journalist- record producer-photographer, features
material from his recent Twisted Love Songs and other CDs. When not
performing in clubs and at festivals around the country, he can be
heard hosting his weekly Dead to the World program and producing his
nationally syndicated Grateful Dead Hour. Onstage he mixes his own
compositions with favorites by an array of folk and rock artists, often
with social and political underpinnings. <http://www.dgans.com>

I should say that I took out a dub of your Plunderphonics CD for a long road
trip last month (along with Infrared Roses, natch) and found it quite a
pleasure, still full of laughter and pathos and, I daresay, a peek into your
echoing brain. And a good accompaniment to the Salinas Valley.

Hello friends!

The CD, The Ones That Look the Weirdest Taste the Best, is here, but the web
page isn't quite ready for prime time. For now, you can see the cover art,
read the credits, listen to audio samples, and click to order at
http://cloudsurfing.gdhour.com/?p=1081

It's also available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/dgans6 and it should be in
the iTunes Music Store soon, too.

I'm staying in California for the rest of the year (unless a cool New Year's
Eve gig comes up somewhere). I'll be in the Northwest in mid-February and in
Utah around the first of March. More on those gigs, and whatever else lies
ahead, in a few weeks.

Here's what I have so far for November and December. Email me for info on the
house concerts, or visit the web page for more information and direct links
to the hosts and venues. http://www.dgans.com/gigs.html
