Alcohol and Other Drug Information
- Project Cork Institute supports educational efforts through its online database of substance abuse information, the preparation of curriculum materials,
and involvement in curriculum development efforts. The Project Cork Database
contains references (with abstracts) to over 13,000
journal articles, books, , etc. on the subject of alcoholism and substance
abuse. The file is updated quarterly. It is available for searching, at no charge.
- The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
(RWJF), the nation's largest substance
abuse philanthropy, has a fine web site.
The site includes current calls for proposals, guidelines, and other health care related information. The RWJF site also contains general information such as how to apply for grants, the names of officers and staff, a descriptive overview of the Foundation, and contact
information. The full texts and excerpts of many
of the Foundation's publications, including ADVANCES, the Foundation's
quarterly newsletter, the annual report, recent news releases, and
information derived from selected grants and programs are also available.
Of particular interest to those with an interest in addictions is the Substance Abuse Policy Research Program site, which contains complete listings of current RWJF calls for proposals and open grants. At this site, too, are many more links to substance abuse information and organizations.

- Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse
- Addiction Research Foundation is North America's
largest
facility combining research, treatment and community action on
substance abuse. An agency of the province of Ontario, the ARF's
mission is to learn about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and to
put that knowledge to work in the form of products, programs and
services that can be used in the community. This is a major resource for alcohol and other drug
information. In addition to information about the Foundation, the web site includes:
- The Addictions Newsletter
is the official newsletter of Division 50 (Addictions) of the American Psychological Association.
The newsletter contains articles and news items of interest to all addiction professionals.
- Addiction Treatment Forum online
newsletter is oriented primarily toward methadone. It contains a wealth of information related to
the use of methadone in the treatment of narcotic drug addiction.
- United Nations International Drug Control
Programme
- Agency for Alcohol and Drug
Problems in Oslo, Norway.
These pages present basic information in English, except for the full-text of the book, The
Psychology of Getting High and a comprehensive collection of information on alcohol and
drug use and problems på norsk.
- CEDRO is the
Centrum voor Drugsonderzoek Universiteit van Amsterdam (Centre for Drug Research). Their
web site contains copies papers written by the center staff on drug related issues.
- RAND is a nonprofit institution dedicated to
improving public policy through research and analysis. They have conducted many influential
studies of alcohol and other drug policies over the years. Some of their recent work is now
available online.
- Virginia Addiction Technology Transfer

- The Center for Substance Abuse
Research (CESAR) at the University of Maryland provides multiple topic oriented bulletin
boards, downloads of research papers, drug facts, and more!
- Brown University Center for Alcohol and
Addiction Studies (CAAS).
- Addiction Training Center of New
England (ATC-NE) site lists a variety of addictions resources for the New England area.
- Center for Education and Drug Abuse
Research (CEDAR). This site describes CEDAR's 20-year family/high-risk study of
substance
abuse, from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
- The Addiction Technology Transfer Center at the
University of Missouri - Kansas City (MO-ATC) is a center for
curriculum design and development, education and training for professionals in health, social
services and criminal justice on alcoholism and other drug dependencies.
- The Mining Company s Alcoholism page offers a weekly update, and plenty of help.
- The New Jersey Council
on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse web site has an excellent news summary service and public
policy resources in addition to information about the organization.
- TheResearch Institute on Addictions web site contains
summaries of research on various addictions topics and information on the Institute.
- Center for
Addiction and Alternative Medicine Research in Minneapolis, Minnesota was created to
study the prevalence and efficacy of alternative/complementary
modalities being used for the treatment of substance abuse.
- Center of Alcohol Studies, Rutgers University is a
multidisciplinary institute dedicated to acquisition and dissemination of knowledge on
psychoactive substance use and related phenomena with primary emphasis on alcohol use and
consequences.
- The UCLA Drug Abuse
Research Center (DARC) is a diverse research organization that investigates psychosocial
and epidemiological issues pertaining to drug use.
- Ask ERIC is a searchable gopher index with
access to many addictions related articles.
- Journal
of Psychoactive Drugs web site provides the Tables of Contents of recent issues and
subscription information.
- Journal of
Studies on Alcohol, is a refereed journal concerned with scientific research related to
alcohol and drugs.
- Stanton Peele is an interesting and sometimes
controversial author and commentator. Among other things you will find Peele s curriculum
vitae, an online library, and the full text of many of his articles.
- Ibogaine, a drug which reportedly
reduces craving in cocaine heroin and poly-drug abusers.
- American
Academy of Addiction Psychiatry
- National Alliance of
Methadone Advocates web site. This site includes information about methadone treatment,
an excellent quiz to test your knowledge about methadone, and methadone client advocacy
information.
- The Sobriety Education Project
offers articles of interest on topics such as Genetics of Alcoholism, Brain Chemistry, and
Controlled Drinking - from the unofficial SOS website.
- International Union of Gospel Missions site
contains information and referrals to low or no cost treatment resources along with information
on the impact of
addiction upon homelessness. The site contains links to the Christian Recovery Connection,
Alcoholics Victorious, and the National Association for Christian
Recovery among others.
- Al Turner, a frequent contributor to the Addict-L mailing list has put up Hooked on Laughter, a
humor page with much alcohol and drug related content.
