OK, I had major drama trying to get that posted, and in the process
started to wonder--Neil, everybody--What are your favorite Shakespeare
movies?

Macbeth, hands down, and The Madness of King Lear. Followed closely
by Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night's Dream.

My English advisor's favorite was Antony and Cleopatra.

NB- just read more closely, Shakespeare *movies*. In which case,
they're Brannagh's *Hamlet* and *Much Ado*. And *Rosencrantz and
Guildenstern Are Dead* needs mentioning.

Well in that case, it's _Shakespeare in Love_ for me.

Well, I love a lot of "Prospero's Books", have a huge fondness for a
couple of bits of the Jarman Tempest, and like some of the Ian
McKellan Richard III. The first Shakespeare film I saw that worked for
me was probably the Polanski "Macbeth", when I was about 15, although
I had just seen the film of "The Final Programme" and kept thinking
that Macbeth was really Jerry Cornelius.

<Mary (with a cold. Am blaming Neil. Convinced that reading about him
being sick has done for me.)>

Now, THAT's a good writer. ;D Feel better quickly, Mary! Here, have
some of this green tea I'm making.

(Funny, I noticed a little bit of a sore throat at some point last
week. "Sympathy pains," I thought with a smirk.)

*pssst* I'm working over here at 1492 pictures which is the Chris
Columbus production company (freakin Harry Potter) and I've been
reading the coverage in the database of various scripts/stories of
Neil's. I'm proud to say that on all of them, the "Recommend this
Writer" box is checked, which is rare in here. I could say more but I
don't want to get my butt in trouble...

Adriana---squee! If you get to meet, or even breathe the same air, as
Alan Rickman, I shall be jealous of you forever. Really.

Neil--I shall try Prospero's Books again, as I couldn't get into it
when I tried to watch it years ago. That may have had something to do
with the other people in the room, who *hated* it.

I have a huge soft spot for Jacobi's Hamlet, with Patrick Stewart &
Lalla Ward. His Richard III is pretty spiffy, too. I did admire
McKellan's--he's marvelous in it. I thought Annette Benning got better
as the film went on.

Must go check the Polanski Scottish play. Can't remember if I've seen
it or not.

*Someone* needs to do a new film version of that bad boy. It's been a
while. I hoped Branagh would try it, but not so far. I'd dreamcast
Daniel Day-Lewis and.......Imogen Stubbs? Fiona Shaw? Emma? Halle?
Wouldn't *that* be something? Kristen Scott Thomas? Hmmmm. Who has
the chops for it?

Mary (who now has something to amuse her for *hours*)

Mary - Twelfth Night with Imogen Stubbs?
*swoon*

Sorry... had a crush on her for years, and you never see her unless
you check the British imports.

Much Ado is my favorite screen adaptation, although Henry V is pretty
damn good as well. (really hated Branagh's Hamlet, though... Sorry
Will). McKellan's Richard would have to be a damn close 3rd though.

Hrm, Daniel Day as MacB... that could be really interesting. Having
someone really charismatic in that role would be VERY good.

Holley Nowell writes:

Just let me slip in here. I just won 2nd place in a 3 building costume
contest! Yayme! There weren't a LOT of costumes to choose from though. The
Jose Cuervo bottle and shot glass girls won first - rightly so as they put a
lot of work into it. Third was some guy in a rubber fright mask. I think they
only gave it to him because they wanted to give one of the prizes to a guy.
Personally, I think the Groovy Dude in beige jacket, bellbottoms and afro wig
was so much better. There was one tall thin girl being Snow White. Did a good
job. The funniest thing about her was when they announced her real name,
though... Elizabeth Taylor. There were two or three witches. An Angel. A
Mime - which the announcer guy kept calling a waitress. Lady Guinevere -
which he seemed incapable of announcing. WHERE do they get their educations?
Oh, he couldn't pronounce Jose Cuervo either and yelled the first place as
Jose CRUZ and shot glass. Oh, I was the Tooth Fairy. I was going to change
out of the costume after the contest but my daughter-in-law just called and
wants me to come over right after work to show my grandson. Sigh. What we
will do for our grandchildren. Luckily it's not a VERY uncomfy costume.

OK. Carry on.

I was just thinking of asking if anyone is in costume today. I caved
and purchased a blond wig yesterday for about ten bucks, so that today
I am proudly Langly.

Wow, first November post. I guess everyone except me is at WFC (which
totally slipped by me; so much for meeting up with people).

I would like to say that Neil is a right bastard, with regards to his answer
about the forgettable God from American Gods.
Seriously though, it was one of the best interviews I've seen on /., and I'm

Dan--go rent this 12th Night right now. Right now, I say. It's dead
brill. Nigel Hawthorne as Malvolio? And Helana BoneMe Carter? And
Ben Kingsley as Feste? Ohmigod, it is *so* good.

P.S. Go, Holley!

P.P.S. I saw Love, Actually this weekend, and it is so good. What a
cast! Good to see Emma working again. Liam Neeson & Bill Nighy are
fantastic. So's Hugh Grant, actually. And I'll watch Alan Rickman
read the phone book. Lovely holiday movie. Go see it.

It does sound good -- and Rickman's in it? I knew there was *some*one

previews flash the characters by so fast that my brain never quite

IJWTS that anyone who was (is? How long does it go?) here for WFC
must have gotten an eyeful... the landscape has been GOR-GE-OUS! and so
has the sky. The weather is like summer, but with a more colorful
backdrop. I've been trying to take walks outdoors while I can, though
I think today may actually be too hot.

In November.
