I just want to report that Deep Oakland is No. 6 on the SF
Chronicle's nonfiction bestseller list for the Bay Area! (Palo Alto
is No. 8.)
  

    
That's in hardcover titles. The press is going to do a second printing,
which really excites me.

As of next week, I will have done twenty different talks, presentations,
and podcasts related to the release of DEEP OAKLAND. Coming up is a talk to
the Northern California Geological Society, my home club. It feels like
quite an honor, even if they find an error or two in my book. But I predict
they won't.

Just picked up my official copy, WITH MAPS AND INDEX unlike the
advance copy, at Oaklandish.
  

    
Honestly felt a rush of excitement that it had an index, which is
mysteriously unpopular these days.
  

    
I insisted. Owing to the tight schedule and late decision, however, I was
obliged to create my own. During my multi-decade freelance career, though, I
have done that, so it wasn't totally amateur.
  

    
Tonight I give a presentation titled "Oakland Geology: Answers and
Questions" to my home club, the Northern California Geological Society.
Unlike the book, it will have lots of pictures and somewhat more arm-waving.

I will start by pointing out that the early geological societies, in Europe
and America, welcomed amateurs as members. Non-professionals gave talks and
had papers published. Now as a member of the geological community, I'm a
fellow professional. But as a researcher, field worker or licensed
practitioner, I'm nowhere near professional. Short of going back for a PhD
at the age of seventy, or being awarded a medal, this talk will be my most
prestigious achievement, and I plan to relish the whole thing.

It was recorded -- we've been doing dual zoom/in-person meetings all
year, and the recordings will go up on our planned YouTube channel
