Simon Rosenberg:

>>Friends, we've been through this before in both 2016 and 2020. It
is early, votes still need to be counted, as we saw in 2020 our vote
comes in late, and Harris has multiple paths to 270. Lots of Dem
vote out everywhere. It's hard but we need to be patient.<<

WOrth remembering that every state called so far for Trump he won in
2020 and still lost that election. Breathe.

ax, I was hoping you'd come sprinkle some hopium here. Thank you.

I suspect I'll be the last one outta here tonight. I expect either
bad news by bedtime or no news til morning, so there's no real point
in hanging out. But I can't imagine sleeping just now.

I'll turn off the lights when I leave.

Exactly. Let's wait for all the votes to be counted and certified.

Our election party guests left early, feeling deflated. I realized
that watching the returns tonight was an exercise in futility, so we
ended the night watching an episode of "The Rookie," then checking
back. Trump does seem perilously close to taking Pennsylvania, but
I'm reminding myself that it's not over til it's over.

Another small blessing out of California, via the Sac Bee:

"California voters decisively favor Prop 4, $10 billion climate bond
The bond marks one of the largest commitments in state history to
tackle the fight against climate change and its effects."

The last time we passed a big bond for water infrastructure it
was used to refit the Oroville Dam. I hope this one also goes to
something important and useful, and not to the Delta bypass tunnel,
which would be a handout to Big Ag.

Because of the time difference in London, I went to bed not long
after the first polls closed but well before any results started to
emerge. For some reason, though, I had a weird feeling about how it
was going to go just from the mood music up to that point. But I
still wasn't braced for what I woke up to.

The European media is in shock and gloom. The political leaders also
look pale and stunned. It's so against all the polls and predictions
going into the election that it's genuinely hard to accept. Really,
what's the point of polls when they are this badly wrong? A
generation of pollsters and pundits have performed so poorly here
that it should be an end to them. An extraordinary outcome, one that
no one predicted, not even Trump himself.

<what's the point of polls when they are this badly wrong?>

I'm not sure what the polls in Britain have been reporting, but here
in the States they've reported a very close race for weeks.

I think a lot of Harris supporters expected Harris to win because,
once again, a Trump win just seemed unthinkable, but even in 2016
the upset wasn't as great as the reaction to it.

I woke up after going to sleep at 11. It is 1 am PST Wednesday. They
are saying Pennsylvania is lost. There is no path to 270 EV for
Harris. It is lost.

I am so depressed by this. I can think of no consolation.

> I'm not sure what the polls in Britain have been reporting

The media here doesn't do it's own polling in the US but it does
relay the US polls which have indeed been really tight (with one
outlier poll in Iowa a few days ago) and Harris having a possible
advantage in the electoral college calculations. But in fact, it's
not even close. A clear win for Trump, no need for him to dispute
the vote in court or on the streets. Few if any expected that.
