There's a decided music presence here on the WELL and I had intended
to ask John to say a word or two about his book "The Song Machine:
Inside the Hit Factory." THE ATLANTIC said that the book "is a
fascinating journey into the strange world of pop music. You'll
never think about music the same way again."

But alas, time expired.

Rose will be 17 next week. She’s a senior in high school and
applying to colleges now. Princeton is kind of a reach for her. My
son did go there and couldnt bear the finance bros so he transferred
to Brown where he was much happier. Rose is looking at HBCUs as well
as Northeast schools such as Vasser, Smith, and Wesleyan. We did go
back to Haiti with her when she was about 6. Shes never met her
birth mother - well, discounting her earliest months - and she didnt
really want to back then. We would have gone back again and even
thought about finding a school there for a year, but things are so
bad now it would be foolish, we’d be kidnapped or worse. Very sad.

The Song Machine is a whole other topic! It can be read as
baxkground to the reunion of Max Martin and Taylor Swift on her new
album, though it doesnt have seemed to have yielded the magic that
their first go round did, with songs like Shake It Off and Blank
Space.

Thanks to Jon and everyone who took part in the discussion. It was a
lot of fun. John
