Inkwell's different in another way.  Those who use pseuds here are anonymous
to anyone reading offline. WELL members must provide their real names for
one another to know, but the name field can be filled with a nickname, a
slogan, a random quote from another poster or a meta-message, for example.

Being able to click on <tinymonster> or <bumbaugh> and get a name and
optinoal bio or comments makes the experience quite different.  The people
who send in mail don't get to see your name if you don't put it out there,
so it's not so unreasonable for them to ask for limited identification.
Besides, our talented hosts can screen for spam, incoherent drooling and
libelous allegations, so it's not the same as having that guest poster put
her own words up in that regard, either. 
   
  

    
What about YOYOW?  Are you able to hold someone responsible for their
post if you do not know who they are?  Or is the posting host the
responsible party in this case? 
  

    
It's reposting -- quoting with permission.  Users always take  general
responsibility for reposting, though they probably can't vouch for the 
accuracy of the info, or the identity of the mailer, for instance. And 
if there were a copyright issue, and we learned of it, of course it 
would be scribbled.  That's the law and common sense.  
  

    

If there were anythiing remotely controversial about the proffered post, we'd
likely want to include more identifying information.

We are both sorry and happy ot make the following announcement:

Sorry to bid adieu to cohost Jon Lebkowsky, whose "real life" has gotten too
busy and productive that he doesn't have time to give this gig the attention
it needs; happy to welcome Hal Royaltey to the team.

Speaking for himself, Hal says:

Hal, did your time there overlap with Von Bertalanffy, or was he already
retired by then?
  

    
I don't remember any Bertelnaffy.  I was there 71-80, but
the last four years (76-80) I was working full time and was
only registered for a single credit while I worked on my
research and dissertation.   My day-to-day interaction with
the department was limited during those years.
  

    
A belated check-in from me -- I've been away on vacation since last Friday
and I didn't get a chance yet to publicly thank Jon Lebkowsky for the
amazing energy and enthusiasm he brought to his role here in Inkwell for the
past mumblemumble (five, has it been five?) years. Jon, it's been such a
pleasure to collaborate with you, we've been blessed with your presence for
such a long time. The WELL and Inkwell.vue has been very lucky, indeed.

We're also delighted that Hal has agreed to join the Inkwell team. I'm
looking forward to helping him get comfortable in the role of Inkwell host
and in seeing what special talents he brings to the project. Thanks, Hal,
for stepping up to the challenge!

Hmmm, I think he might have died a couple of years before that.

Ludwig Von Bertalanffy, physician turned biologist turned systems 
theorist, widely considered one of the founders of the systems movement, 
along with mathematician Anatol Rappaport and economist Kenneth Boulding.
Author of "General Systems Theory" and subject of "Uncommon Sense", by 
Mark Davidson.  He wound up his career at Stony Brook, but I think he was 
still in Canada when GST was published.
