Oh, please don't forget that Jared Diamond is on my wish list.
Good luck and thanks to both Jon and Hal!
A reminder: the Well will be relocating its computers this Saturday. The Well will be shut down starting at 6AM PDT Saturday, and the computers will be physically hauled to a new location and reconnected. We expect to be back up by Saturday evening. The Official Notice follows ... ======================================================================= DOWNTIME: Beginning Saturday, May 28th at 6am Pacific Time, The WELL and Salon will be moving all servers to a new colocation site. IP numbers will change with the move, though the names of all servers will stay the same. Barring unforseen difficulties, we expect to be back Saturday night. Email to WELL addresses will soft-bounce and be delivered after a delay. For more details, go to the System Status page. This move puts our servers into a more modern and disaster-resistant facility. We apologize for any inconvenience. ====================================================================

I guess these relocations are a bit less momentous than they were back in the good ol' days. But still....Good Luck!

Recently, Inkwell host David Gans let us know that he's resigning from Inkwell to devote his full attention to his burgeoning musical career. David has been a host here since this conference began back in 1998, and we're grateful for all his contributions to this conference and to The WELL community. It's been a pleasure for me, personally, to have the chance to be on this team with David. I've admired his intelligence and talent from afar since I first joined The WELL back in 1993, and over the past 7+ years, I've been lucky to get to know him and appreciate him even more through our teamwork together. I'm sorry to see you stepping down, David, but I'm happy for you that your musical career is doing so well. I wish you great financial rewards and immense personal satisfaction as you go forward.

With David's resignation in the works, we're now looking for a new cohost to join the Inkwell.vue hosting team. Generally, hosts of Featured conferences (http://www.well.com/conf/xyz.html) are selected by WELL management from among our WELL membership. Different conferences need different kinds of hosting, and we look for hosts based on criteria specific to the conference. Quieter places may need a talkative, outgoing person who will help spur conversation. Others might benefit from a host with a special kind of expertise or interest in a particular subject. Some of our more rambunctious conferences need hosts who excel in the diplomatic arts; some need hosts who are especially sensitive to the emotional content of a conversation. WELL members who want to know more about this particular hostship and what we're looking for can drop by <hosts.529> to get details.

Hooray! Inkwell.vue has a new host to announce today! It's <davadam> -- David Adam Edelstein! David's a talented photographer and cohost of the <arts.> conference. He's been a member of The WELL for more than 15 years. He's smart and funny and, so far as I can tell, pretty dang unflappable. I'm looking forward to seeing him put his stamp on this unusual and rewarding hostship. Congratulations, David, and welcome!

Really there were only a few choices, due to the little-known Conservation Of Davids law. Thanks, Cynthia! I think this is going to be good fun.

So Inkwell hasn't had any business for the past 15 years? After conversation and introspection, the current hosts of Inkwell.vue <jonl>, <lrph>, and <julieswn> have decided they are ready to turn over the reins to a new crop of hosts. Two of those hosts have joined the gang of five in co-hosting Media, so they are still very much active and with us. Inkwell.vue is one of the very few conferences on the Well which are world- readable, although not world-writable. If there are volunteers interested in taking it on, possibly moving it in a new direction, make yourselves known by emailing confteam@well.com. Most recent Inkwell energy center Jon Lebkowsky has generously offered to work with new hosts, do a knowledge transfer and help them get rolling. He also intends to continue to conduct the annual State of the World interview topic in January with Bruce Sterling.
We should get <lagoon> in here to talk about his new book about Samuel L. Jackson. It's coming out on October 19th and they are ramping up the promotional drive right now.
Ooh, what fun! Yes!
That sounds great!
Another idea. Have the author of the The Colonel's Brother, Stephanie Vale, in for a chat. <vard> has contact info and a deep inside track with Ms. Vale.
Vard interviewing Stephanie? Awesome!
Whoa!
Ha!
