When you start aikido, you wear a white belt and you don't have a rank. Something appeals to you about learning how to take roll, knowing a few Japanese words, and working out with your mates on the mat. With a hundred reasons to do something else, you keep coming to practice. Tests are a methodical way of organizing this knowledge and recognition of your perseverance.
